ᐅ How do I prepare IKEA BESTA furniture for painting?

Hello everyone, I want to paint my IKEA BESTÅ furniture to give it a custom finish. Since the original coating or surface is often melamine-coated or laminated, I am facing the challenge of how to best prepare the surface for repainting. What steps are important to ensure good adhesion and achieve a smooth, durable finish in the long term? Do I need to sand everything down completely, or is a thorough cleaning and a special primer sufficient? Are there any experiences with the materials used, such as chipboard substrates and melamine or laminate coatings? I would appreciate any tips on the practical approach, materials used (sandpaper, primer, types of paint), and potential pitfalls.

I have achieved very good adhesion using this method.

I generally agree with that, but I would like to question how durable the coating really is in terms of the surface. These are not solid wood panels but particle boards with a decorative layer. How long does the coating actually last under heavy use, for example in living areas with daily wear? Would it not be better to consider alternative surface finishes like coating films, which also require less preparation?

Furthermore: which primer exactly do you use? Cleaner and sandpaper are well known – but the choice of primer is often crucial.

So far, I have used PU primers from well-known paint manufacturers, specifically those explicitly suitable for plastics and coated panels. It is important that the primer chemically reacts with the surface and allows for micromechanical interlocking through sanding.

Regarding durability: Of course, with heavy mechanical stress, compromises have to be made with such furniture systems. However, for typical household use, surfaces with proper preparation and decent painting last significantly longer than expected.

Interesting. Do you have any comparisons on whether a 2K PU primer adheres better than, for example, special acrylic-based adhesion promoters? I ask because the higher technical effort and the required safety equipment for 2K products may not be suitable for everyone. An alternative, since when painting furniture it often needs to be formulated for interior use without particularly toxic substances.

I would like to add that there are also acrylic-based adhesion primers that work well with the BESTÅ coating. These are less toxic and easier to apply.

Important: To ensure the paint lasts, you really need to sand evenly everywhere so that the primer can bond properly. This also applies to edges and hard-to-reach areas.

If you’re unsure, I would recommend starting with a small test piece to check how the primer and paint react on the surface.

Summary:
- Clean
- Lightly sand to a matte finish
- Apply primer
- Paint

A special primer is important for the BESTÅ. Otherwise, the paint will not adhere properly or will wear off quickly.

Hey, a quick addition from me: If you can take the furniture apart anyway (back panels, doors), then do it. Sanding and painting will be much easier, and you’ll be able to reach the edges cleanly. Nothing is more frustrating than missing a spot at home in a corner and having the paint chip off later.

And yes, patience is key. Let each coat dry properly – even if it’s difficult. This prevents unsightly bubbles or cracks. Then it will turn out great!
