We need a new sound system. I bought my current one over 25 years ago, and since then, I have missed all the technical advancements in this area. But slowly, it’s getting annoying to listen to music only from the computer.

Can someone recommend a manufacturer?

UH interesting topic.
We will also be looking into this area in about 2 years at the latest. Our problem is that my husband is practically deaf in the left ear and has only 60% hearing in the right. In addition, we have a small child who wouldn’t be gentle with free-standing speakers. Friends have a soundbar in front of their TV. It actually sounds really good, and then maybe hide a speaker in the corner of the room on the right side.
Do these systems still run completely wired nowadays, or is good quality wireless also an option?

1000€ receiver just to stream Spotify. Yay.

The original poster should clarify what kind of sources/media they want to play and if there is a rough budget. For casual streaming via services or from a smartphone, a Sonos speaker (or similar) is totally sufficient in my opinion. Anything over 500€ would be completely excessive for normal home use.

Come on, just agree on something! You’re just confusing me again. 😉

So, I really just want to listen to music with it. We have the TV at the other end of the house. It should be decent, but I didn’t want to spend more than 1000 (about 1100 US dollars). Is that possible? I have a week off next week, so I’ll drop by those notorious stores to check it out. 🙂

I think I’ll start with Yamaha – apparently, some people have had good experiences with them.

What I have in mind isn’t overpriced and can be had for around 1000,-. I want to emphasize again: Don’t buy from Amazon, go and listen yourself. In a store. With your own CD. Your own music. Bring one along. In my opinion, Sonos/Bose/Teufel Raumfeld are not good value for what they offer. They all deliver bass-heavy Helene Fischer sound. If that’s what you want, fine.

What I actually imagined is that she goes into a store, looks at Yamaha and maybe Onkyo, listens to different speakers. Then the combination forms: let’s say Heco Victa, Yamaha R-N 301 receiver, Yamaha CDS 300 CD player. Without cables (which is another 25,- on top), I’m at 700–750,- euros. With this setup, she can listen to music from radio, CD, USB stick, iPod. In clean HiFi quality for years. She’ll have a solid full metal case in the room, with a real power button. And it will last another 20 years. In my opinion, my combination would be suitable for modern pop music, musicals, a string quartet, but also for home party sound if there is ever one without a cooking show.

Yes, it’s not high end. I know that. But somewhere this HiFi scene is a madhouse. The nonsense talked about tone and sound—they don’t even hear it, yet they spend thousands on some lab measurements, crazy stuff. You don’t have to join that. Karsten
