We need a new sound system. I bought my current one over 25 years ago, and since then, I have missed all the technical advancements in this area. But slowly, it’s getting annoying to listen to music only from the computer.

Can someone recommend a manufacturer?

Should it be just a "stereo system," or more of a home theater setup for the TV with an AV receiver and various players?

If it was a quality brand 35 years ago, like Marantz or Yamaha, there hasn’t really been much progress.

However, if you have issues with old equipment, visit a specialist hi-fi store; some larger electronics stores like Saturn also have a dedicated section. Take a look at a Yamaha receiver and a matching CD player. The price-performance ratio favors this brand. Solid components, a real power on/off switch, and a pure direct circuit to listen to classical music without distortion. Good, large speaker terminals and reliable radio reception. If needed, it also delivers strong bass without overheating. High quality. No plastic housings.

For speakers, I recommend deciding based on your own listening rather than reviews. For example, my son loves Heco, while I prefer Canton as it sounds less dry and warmer. He listens mostly to lounge and techno, while I prefer hard rock and classical. You’ll notice what I mean when you compare them side by side.

Expect to pay around 900–1000 (currency varies) for such a set. It shouldn’t cost more than that. Karsten

Well, I honestly have no idea what a home theater is. Good speakers are important to me. Yamaha, then. I’ll take a look. What do heco and canton mean?

These are enclosure manufacturers. Not exactly beginners. So, it seems your knowledge is limited. Trust your ears.

So, speakers not from Yamaha but another manufacturer. Noted. Thanks already.
