ᐅ Purchasing a New Stereo Music System – Which Manufacturer to Choose?

We need a new sound system. I bought my current one over 25 years ago, and since then, I have missed all the technical advancements in this area. But slowly, it’s getting annoying to listen to music only from the computer.

Can someone recommend a manufacturer?

Maybe it would also be helpful if you shared what you have been using for listening to music so far and what you want to replace now (I believe 11ant also asked this before).

Exactly, I even asked for a photo of the equipment to be replaced. That way you get a sense of the scale (which I fear isn’t much bigger than a compact speaker, and that I don’t need to mention Transrotor or Kebschull—not just because of budget constraints).

Am I right in assuming that what’s wanted here is a setup powered by just a single power plug for the whole system?

And one last note: Yamaha was, at least 25 years ago, just one manufacturer among many,

Oh yes, they were quite decent and offered a wide range (e.g. from receivers to preamplifiers and power amplifiers). Back then, NAD and Poroton were little-known but highly recommended, and for a higher budget (just below Burmester), T+A was an option.

I would strongly advise against being talked into any kind of hi-fi high-end voodoo nonsense. Expensive cables, etc. That’s total nonsense and a waste of money.

No, the truth usually lies somewhere “in the middle.” And as I’ve mentioned before, with around 10 meters (33 feet) of speaker cable is where the saturation limit begins—beyond that, a layperson won’t notice any improvement.

I consider amplifiers to be of secondary importance unless you are dealing with high-end equipment. With the setup shown in the attachment (costing around €15), I ran a small homemade 2.1 system for a while. If the speakers are of a certain quality, you only notice differences when you really try to hear them.

Honestly, you’re really exaggerating now. What exactly the old unit was doesn’t really matter. It was just a cheap all-in-one system I bought 25 years ago when I was a student. I’m honestly too lazy to even take a photo of it. It’s not worth it. I wouldn’t claim it should be considered the standard either.

Several manufacturers have already been mentioned. I’ve taken note of them all. Now, during Advent, I’m on vacation with my partner. We’ll go to the big city and listen to some examples. 🙂

Okay. Everyone has their own opinion. I was always amused when I heard: "The CD player doesn’t sound good yet, but it has new cables, so they still need to break in."

But cable sound still seems to be a topic. 😀

But this is off-topic anyway.

On the subject:
Giving advice is generally difficult because sound is a matter of taste. If you like dynamics and a live feel, for example, the Klipsch RP-280F might be something for you. I personally prefer neutrality and uncolored reproduction, which others might find boring.

For 600–800€ (around 630–840 USD), you can already get some really decent speakers. Add an amplifier up to max. 200€ (about 210 USD), for example a Denon PMA-520AE (in my opinion, even a cheaper one is sufficient), and, for instance, a used iPod Touch 5G for about 100€ (105 USD).

Cool. Just now, the CD player in the system upstairs also stopped working. However, it is also 20 years old.

You see, that already clarifies something important: you don’t just want a noisy speaker “just new,” but an improvement over what you’ve had before. And you basically can’t name the currently popular brands that make them—which is no shame at all :-)
