We need a new sound system. I bought my current one over 25 years ago, and since then, I have missed all the technical advancements in this area. But slowly, it’s getting annoying to listen to music only from the computer.

Can someone recommend a manufacturer?
Minimum requirements:
MP3, USB, radio, CD

@Karsten: Ok, that sounds reasonable. I don’t need background music either. If it has to be 1000% perfect, I’ll go to a live concert. 🙂

PS: If I play my music in the store, I’ll probably get stoned. But classical music will do as well.

No. It’s normal to put your music there. If necessary, coordinate with the seller.

Really? And can I make them loud too?
Okay, that will be a test for mom! :o

If this is a genuine hi-fi store and not a mass-market electronics retailer, it shouldn’t be a problem—even if you have an "alternative" taste in music.

In those types of shops, just be careful that they don’t try to sell you gold-plated cables wrapped with horsehair eyelashes as an extra.

For anyone interested in learning a bit more beyond advertising, marketing, and hype, I recommend the website hifiaktiv by David Messinger.
Warning: If you plan to spend 1000 euros (about $1100) on a turntable or 20 euros (about $22) per meter (3 feet) on audio cables, you might want to avoid the site. It could be painful. ;-)

1000€ receiver just to stream Spotify. Yay.

Spotify Connect streams at 320 kbps. Maybe a lossless option will be available soon, which many are waiting for. I probably wouldn’t be able to hear a difference though. My whole setup, including two Canton floor-standing speakers and a receiver, cost around 1200 euros.

Honestly... about 40 km (25 miles) from here, there is an expert electronics store. They have a section with some HiFi equipment. Two or three systems, ready for testing. A Yamaha, a Sony surround system, and one from Marantz.
I brought my CD with me. It was no problem to listen to it. Connecting other speakers also worked. But the selection was really basic. In a big city like Leipzig, you can find better options. Bet on it?
