ᐅ Ergonomically Installing Ikea Metod Kitchen Cabinets with Soft-Close Doors and Drawers

ElibiHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of my new IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, especially the cabinets with soft-close doors and drawers, and I want to design them as ergonomically as possible.
My specific question is: What are the recommended working heights and cabinet combinations for the Metod series to ensure an ergonomic and comfortable use of soft-close doors and drawers?
I am also interested in how to ideally adjust the cabinets to the user’s height so that bending or stretching when opening or closing is minimized—especially considering the soft-close feature, which often operates a bit slower and should therefore provide greater comfort.
Are there practical tips for arranging drawers and doors, for example regarding handle positions or spacing, that support ergonomic use?
Looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

With Metod cabinets, adjustable feet often help to fine-tune this height.
Soft-close does not affect ergonomics; it is more of a comfort feature.

Regarding ergonomics for IKEA Metod cabinets with soft-close:
- The optimal working height is usually between 90 and 94 cm (35 to 37 inches), depending on the user’s height.
- Upper cabinets should be installed so that the handles are easily reachable when standing upright, approximately 140–160 cm (55 to 63 inches) from the floor.
- For drawers, it is advisable to install deeper drawers (e.g., 60 cm (24 inches) wide) near the bottom, as they require less bending to operate ergonomically.
- The soft-close feature mainly provides smoother closing behavior; however, the resistance when opening can vary depending on the drawer contents and weight.
In summary, personal height and usage should be considered, and adjustable legs can be used if necessary.

Soft-close does not otherwise make a difference in terms of ergonomics; it is more of a comfort feature. That’s a good point, thank you. However, I’m also interested in whether the soft-close system affects adjustment options. For example, since doors or drawers close slightly slower or more softly, does this influence the optimal handle height or positioning?

The soft-close function mainly improves closing behavior, but depending on drawer contents and weight, the opening resistance can vary.Could you please elaborate on that? I imagine that the ergonomic benefit especially depends on how much force is required to open when the soft-close function is active.
Does anyone have experience with whether different types of handles (e.g., recessed handles versus pull bars) can improve the usability of soft-close doors?
Hi Elibi, just casually: Soft-close is great because you no longer have slamming doors – which protects not only your furniture but also your nerves. 😄
When it comes to ergonomics, handle position is really key. Recessed handles give you just the right grip without having to twist your hand awkwardly.
Tip: For Metod, vertical handle strips work well because they accommodate different hand sizes and let you open the door where it’s most comfortable for you – at the top, middle, or bottom.
However, if you use regular handles, make sure they’re not too sharp. Soft-close makes the doors heavier, and you don’t want to have to use a lot of force to hold them closed.

I would like to delve deeper into the topic here:
The IKEA Metod series is characterized by standardized dimensions that allow for modular customization. For ergonomics with soft-close doors and drawers, you should consider the following:
- Worktop height: Ideally varies between 85 and 95 cm (33 to 37 inches) and should be adapted to the user's height. A precise calculation is ‘elbow height minus 10-15 cm (4 to 6 inches).’
- Cabinet bases: With the adjustable feet, you can fine-tune the height down to the millimeter. Keep in mind that the plinth should be at least 10 cm (4 inches) high for easy cleaning and storage space under the cabinet.
- Soft-close mechanism: Doors and drawers are equipped with dampers that ensure gentle closing—at the same time, they slightly increase the opening resistance, which is hardly noticeable if the handles are well positioned.
Handle types:
- Recessed handles offer ergonomic advantages because they allow natural hand positioning and accommodate different grips.
- Mounted handles increase leverage but can be less comfortable if placement is not optimal.
Additionally, door and drawer heights should be chosen to ensure ergonomic comfort for frequent users: for example, tall drawers for less frequently used items rather near the bottom or middle, while everyday items remain easily accessible.
Would it make sense to know the exact kitchen measurements and your height to provide more precise recommendations?
