Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of my new IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, especially the cabinets with soft-close doors and drawers, and I want to design them as ergonomically as possible.

My specific question is: What are the recommended working heights and cabinet combinations for the Metod series to ensure an ergonomic and comfortable use of soft-close doors and drawers?

I am also interested in how to ideally adjust the cabinets to the user’s height so that bending or stretching when opening or closing is minimized—especially considering the soft-close feature, which often operates a bit slower and should therefore provide greater comfort.

Are there practical tips for arranging drawers and doors, for example regarding handle positions or spacing, that support ergonomic use?

Looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Does it make sense to know the exact kitchen dimensions and your height to give more precise recommendations?

Absolutely, thanks for the offer.

My height is 178 cm (5 ft 10 in), and the kitchen is about 3 m (10 ft) wide with a U-shaped countertop. I’m planning to use Metod base cabinets with a module width of 60 cm (24 inches). The countertop height is intended to be around 92 cm (36 inches), which feels most comfortable for me.

My current focus is on how to arrange the drawers and doors in the best possible way to work with a healthy back posture and minimize stretching. I also like the soft-close function but want to avoid that the usability suffers from having to open them with too much force. Maybe the choice or positioning of handles could help improve this?

At 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) and a countertop height of about 92 cm (36 inches), you are within the recommended ergonomic range.

Regarding the soft-close feature, it does not significantly affect the opening, as long as you have handles that are comfortable to grip.

For Metod, handle strips or recessed handles are recommended because they provide a natural hand position.

Avoid handle types that are positioned too far forward, as this would cause unnecessary stretching.

As an addition: With Metod, you should pay attention to the depth of the drawers.

- Use upper drawers with shallower depths (e.g., 20-40 cm (8-16 inches)) for frequently used items so they can be accessed without bending down.
- Larger, deeper drawers can be reserved for lower sections.
- The handle position on soft-close doors and drawers should be centered or slightly toward the top to avoid excessive leverage while keeping operation comfortable.

The soft-close system works independently of the handle position but does affect the overall feel when opening and closing.

Thank you very much, that helps me a lot!

In summary, I plan to set the countertop height at about 92 cm (36 inches), use an adjustable plinth height, and arrange the drawers so that deeper drawers are installed at the bottom and shallower ones at the top.

For the choice of handles, I am leaning towards recessed handle strips, which are ergonomically favorable.

If anyone has further insights, for example regarding the door stop angles on soft-close doors or experiences from daily use after installation, I would be very interested.
