Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of planning and installing an IKEA Metod kitchen unit in a way that is both ergonomically practical and visually appealing. I would like to know which specific steps and principles you recommend when assembling a Metod kitchen to ensure an optimal work height, sensible storage layout, and a modern design at the same time. It is especially important to me how to best adapt the typical IKEA components, which often have standardized dimensions, to individual user needs and what experience you have with design elements or combinations that are both functional and attractive. Which extras or additions are really worth it? It would be great if you could share your tips and suggestions as specifically as possible, along with your reasons. Thanks in advance!

If you want to design the Metod kitchen ergonomically, remember: comfort is also style! 😉
- Adjust the worktop height individually; this makes kitchen tasks much more comfortable.
- For an attractive look, choose contrasting front colors with modern handles – matte or glossy, depending on your preference.
- Under-cabinet lighting can work wonders and highlight your countertops.
I would also recommend modular inserts for drawers to keep everything in place and avoid clutter. Cooking becomes much more enjoyable this way!

Aren’t strong color contrasts with Metod more of a trend and potentially outdated in the long term? I tend to prefer designs that use neutral tones for greater durability and wonder how this affects ergonomics.

One approach is to keep the base color neutral (white, gray, beige) and add accents only through handles, countertops, or backsplashes. Ergonomics remain unaffected. The key is that the color scheme does not disrupt the flow of use.
I find the discussion about color design and ergonomics very interesting! I would also like to know how you organize the interior layout of the Metod base cabinets. Especially regarding kitchen utensils that are frequently used (knives, cutting boards, frying pans) – is it worth investing in specialized interior fittings, or is it better to stick with classic drawers? And what about waste separation in an ergonomic solution? Are there any recommendations for systems that work particularly well in small kitchen units?
Regarding the interior layout:
- Cutlery trays and modular inserts in the top drawers improve organization.
- Cutting boards should be stored vertically and narrow, for example in special dividers.
- Pots and pans are best kept in large pull-out drawers with compartments.
- Waste sorting can be implemented in dedicated pull-out bins under the countertop; IKEA offers suitable inserts for this purpose.
The Metod system supports these modular solutions very well.
