Hello everyone, I’d like to hear about your experiences and recommendations regarding “BILLY bookshelf with pets – safety measures.” I have a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA standing against the wall, and we have two very curious cats who like to hide inside it or jump on the shelves. I’m worried the bookshelf might tip over or that the pets might knock things down. What options are there to make the bookshelf safer without making major changes to the furniture? Are there specific fasteners or safety devices that have proven effective? Looking forward to your tips!

Hey, great question! 🙂 I solved it like this at my place: The BILLY shelf is securely mounted to the wall, as recommended, but to make it more interesting and safer for the cats, I placed a few climbing elements next to it – a scratching post and a small shelf with resting spots. This way, the cats are distracted and don’t use the BILLY as their main play area. I also put soft non-slip mats on the shelves, which provide grip and reduce stress on their paws.

I think that’s important, as it reduces wear on the furniture itself and keeps the cats entertained. 😉

Just as an additional note: When the shelf is mounted on the wall, this also provides tip-over protection. More security is only achieved by installing grids or plexiglass in addition. Otherwise, a good wall fixation is usually sufficient.

One more tip: Cats often like to maintain their height. Alternatively, attaching resting surfaces at eye level to the shelf can help reduce climbing attempts within the furniture.

Wall mounting is mandatory. Additionally, some users stabilize the shelves with thin metal strips at the bottom, which are screwed into the floor. For cats, transparent acrylic sheets installed inside help prevent them from entering the compartments while keeping visibility. Alternative climbing options next to the shelf are recommended.
