Hello everyone, I’d like to hear about your experiences and recommendations regarding “BILLY bookshelf with pets – safety measures.” I have a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA standing against the wall, and we have two very curious cats who like to hide inside it or jump on the shelves. I’m worried the bookshelf might tip over or that the pets might knock things down. What options are there to make the bookshelf safer without making major changes to the furniture? Are there specific fasteners or safety devices that have proven effective? Looking forward to your tips!
One of the most effective safety measures for the BILLY shelves is securely anchoring them to the wall. IKEA provides specific wall mounting kits that are sturdy and easy to install. Additionally, I recommend placing heavy items only on the lower shelves and lighter or smaller objects on the upper shelves. For homes with pets, flexible meshes or acrylic panels can be installed inside to prevent animals from accidentally jumping into the shelves. It is also important to check for any sharp edges to ensure that pets do not get injured.
I can relate to that well, especially with curious cats, a shelf like that can be a bit of a challenge. We also added thicker plastic around the lower part of the shelf to prevent the cats from scratching easily or encountering sharp edges. I also think it’s important to provide the cats with alternative climbing and hiding spots. That helps distract them and protects the BILLY.
I completely agree. Especially for safety reasons, it’s crucial to consider this carefully so the animals don’t get hurt.

Regarding tip-over protection: Due to its height and relatively narrow base, the BILLY shelf can tip over if cats jump on it. Secure wall anchoring is essential to prevent accidents.
Additionally, using non-slip pads under the feet is recommended to further improve stability.
To protect cats, adjustable mesh guards can be installed individually in the compartments to prevent the animals from getting stuck or pulling items down. The modular design of BILLY shelves allows for flexible installation options.

What worked for me: I use standard metal brackets for wall mounting, similar to those offered by IKEA, and placed non-slip foam rubber pads under the lower shelves. This made the shelving unit significantly more stable. For the cats, I also attached soft, sturdy plexiglass panels to the sides, so they can't jump inside, but you can still see everything.
