Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Billy bookcase that I mainly use for storing books. I’ve noticed that the shelves bend significantly under heavier loads, which not only looks unattractive but also affects the stability of the entire unit. My question is: how can I increase the load capacity and stability of my Billy bookcase to prevent the shelves from bending? Are there practical, sustainable measures, such as reinforcements or other adjustments, that can be implemented without much effort? I would appreciate any tips or experiences regarding this issue.

That’s a reasonable question. Basically, the design of the BILLY shelf is based on affordable materials, primarily lightweight particleboard. Naturally, this results in a lower load capacity. Before adding reinforcements, it’s advisable to determine the actual load range—are the loads significantly above the recommended 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf? If so, it might be necessary to reconsider the material. Have you checked how much the shelves are sagging (in cm) or how exactly the stability is affected?

Thank you for the quick response! Yes, the load is actually around 40 to 50 kg per shelf. The deflection in the middle of the shelves is about 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6 to 0.8 inches), which causes the unit to visibly wobble when pulling out or leaning on it. It feels less stable than the construction should be. I am therefore looking for ways to reinforce both the shelves and the overall structure.

Use stronger shelves, such as plywood or MDF with a thickness of 18-20mm (0.7-0.8 inches). This prevents sagging. Alternatively, screw battens underneath the shelves.

Attach metal brackets to the shelves. This will make them more stable and able to support more weight.

Reinforcing with wooden battens under the floors at the front edge can work wonders. Simply attach them with screws.
