Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Billy bookcase that I mainly use for storing books. I’ve noticed that the shelves bend significantly under heavier loads, which not only looks unattractive but also affects the stability of the entire unit. My question is: how can I increase the load capacity and stability of my Billy bookcase to prevent the shelves from bending? Are there practical, sustainable measures, such as reinforcements or other adjustments, that can be implemented without much effort? I would appreciate any tips or experiences regarding this issue.
On the topic of stability: It is also helpful to secure the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping. The shelves can be further stabilized with stronger supports – for example, by adding metal profiles underneath the boards.
If you are skilled in DIY, you could also use special strips made of plywood, precisely cut to size and screwed under the shelves. This increase in material stiffness helps to significantly reduce bending.

I can fully understand how frustrating it is when the shelves bend and the whole thing feels unstable. Personally, I found that using a combination of sturdy wooden strips underneath the shelves and securing the bookshelf to the wall was very reassuring. This makes it feel more secure, and the risk of it tipping over is significantly reduced! You are not alone with this problem.
It's great that we can have such a good discussion about this topic! 🙂 I had exactly the same problem and simply cut wooden boards to the length of the shelves. I then screwed them underneath to prevent the shelves from sagging. Since then, the shelf has been very stable, and I can finally stack all my books on it without worrying about anything breaking or wobbling. 🙂
Maybe this could work for you too!
