ᐅ Kallax shelves creak, especially after moving – is this normal?

Hello everyone,
I recently reassembled my Kallax shelving unit after a move, and I noticed that the individual shelves often creak and make cracking noises when stepped on or even just walked over. This didn’t happen before, or at least not as noticeably. Does anyone have experience with whether this creaking is normal after a move or when reinstalling the shelves?
I’m wondering if the transport or reassembly caused tension or slight misalignments that might be causing the noise. The shelf is placed on a relatively level laminate floor and isn’t overloaded, only filled with books.
Are there any tips on how to reduce or fix these noises without taking the shelf apart? Or would it be advisable to carefully check the shelves again for alignment or material fatigue?
I’m grateful for any suggestions!

Creaking often occurs due to slight looseness in connections. After moving, the assembly can shift slightly, which increases noise. It is recommended to readjust, especially by lightly tightening screws and checking that all mounting brackets are correctly positioned.
Another possibility: Kallax shelves are reinforced with a support panel for stability. If this panel does not sit perfectly flat, tensions can develop. An additional felt pad between the shelf and the frame can help in this case.

For additional information: Besides the material used, the construction itself can also be crucial. Even the smallest unevenness or warping in the frame can cause creaking noises.
Therefore, it is worthwhile to assemble the shelf on a truly level surface and check the shelves before installation.
It is also recommended to lightly treat the contact edges with furniture wax – this effectively reduces squeaking.

Fill small strips of felt or foam rubber between the shelves and the inside of the frame. This tip is very helpful. In my experience, the combination of light damping and fine adjustments produces the best results.
Additionally, tightening the screws in a crisscross pattern helps ensure even tension and minimizes twisting.
Thank you for the many helpful tips! In summary, I understand that creaking after moving can be normal and is mostly caused by friction at contact points, as well as slight twisting and uneven surfaces.
I will first check if the shelves fit precisely, inspect all screws, and try using felt pads. I hadn’t really considered that moisture and temperature conditions affect the material, but that fits well into the context.
Is there any recommendation on how to properly relax and stabilize the shelving unit if it is moved? Do you have to start all over again, or is there a kind of “maintenance” for the Kallax after repositioning? Thanks in advance!

1. Before reassembling, make sure to build it on a flat, stable surface.
2. Tighten the screws diagonally and gently, not too tight, to avoid twisting.
3. Use felt strips to dampen any tension.
4. Once the shelf is standing, adjust pressure points or height differences, for example by placing small rubber or felt pads under the feet.
5. Check the condition again after a few days, since the material will still adjust to the load and climate.
The shelf is sturdy, but as with many particleboard-based furniture items, wait a few days until everything stabilizes and listen to the material – creaking should then noticeably decrease.
