Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy shelving unit with a high-gloss finish and am unsure about the best way to care for it without damaging the shine or leaving streaks. High-gloss surfaces seem to require much more careful cleaning and maintenance compared to matte or painted furniture.

I am particularly interested in tips and advice on the right cleaning methods, which care products are suitable, and which ones should be avoided. Are there any special tricks to deal with or prevent fingerprints, dust, or small scratches? And how often should such shelves generally be cleaned to maintain the high-gloss finish over time?

Thank you all for your experiences and expert recommendations!

For the care of Billy shelves with high-gloss surfaces, I recommend combining several aspects:

1. Cleaning: For daily cleaning, use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth slightly dampened to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents, as these can dull the finish.

2. Care products: Special high-gloss care products designed for lacquered or coated furniture help to improve minor scratches and maintain the shine. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to use compatible products.

3. Handling scratches: Minor scratches can be treated with very fine polish or special repair pens for high-gloss surfaces. It is advisable to test on an inconspicuous area first to prevent damage.

4. Cleaning frequency: Dust should be removed regularly, for example once a week, while more intensive cleaning and care every two to three months is recommended depending on use and visibility.

Finally, direct sunlight and excessive moisture should be avoided as much as possible, since these can cause the high-gloss finish to fade or deteriorate over time.

This is an important point. However, I wonder if common household cleaners, which often contain ammonia or alcohol, are unsuitable anyway?

I’m also unclear about how the surfaces of high-gloss Billy shelves compare to real lacquered finishes, especially regarding their sensitivity to cleaning. Does anyone have reliable experience or sources on which substances should definitely be avoided?

Furthermore, I appreciate the explanation about the recommended cleaning frequency, but why exactly two to three months for polishing? That seems quite general—couldn’t it vary significantly depending on how the furniture is used?

Yes, such cleaners are generally problematic for high-gloss surfaces. Ammonia and alcohol can damage the paint layer and cause long-term harm. For the Billy shelf, whose high-gloss finish is often a special foil coating or glossy lacquer, a pH-neutral cleaner or simply a slightly damp microfiber cloth is the safest choice.

how the surfaces of Billy shelves in high-gloss differ from real lacquered surfaces, especially in terms of care sensitivity.

Billy shelves mostly use a plastic foil or melamine coating that is high-gloss but does not have the same durability as multilayer lacquer finishes. As a result, they tend to be more sensitive to solvents and mechanical impact.

This timeframe is a guideline for the average user. If the furniture sees heavier use, such as in homes with children, or is frequently touched, a shorter maintenance interval can be advisable to preserve the shine.

Microfiber cloths are essential for high-gloss surfaces. Do not apply water directly to the wood; clean only with a slightly damp cloth. Remove fingerprints using a small amount of glass cleaner, but always test first in an inconspicuous area. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
