Hello everyone,

I have some particleboard shelves from Billy units that I want to clean thoroughly without damaging the surface or edges. My main concern is how to best remove dust, light stains, and possibly sticky spots without causing the surface to become dull or swollen. Which cleaning products are particularly suitable for painted or melamine-coated shelves, and how should I use them most effectively (e.g., moisture level of cloths, cleaning frequency)? I would really appreciate specific tips and experiences with different products or methods that protect the material while ensuring a thorough cleaning. Thanks in advance!

I recently noticed that for light grease stains, gently rubbing with an eraser-like cleaning paste (available at drugstores) sometimes works better than liquid cleaners, without damaging the surface. Of course, always test carefully in an inconspicuous spot first.

Does anyone here have a kind of “feel” or rule of thumb for how “damp enough” is defined?

I simply use microfiber cloths, wring them out until they are damp, and sometimes hold the cloth briefly in the air so any droplets are gone. That way, it’s not too wet.

In short: a damp microfiber cloth with mild dish soap in water, not too wet, and dry immediately. This is how to keep Billi shelves clean and avoid damage.

I also tried using furniture oils or polishes on Billy bookshelf shelves. My conclusion: avoid it, as the surface becomes sticky and attracts more dust. Additionally, it can damage the melamine coating.

Therefore, it’s better to stick to a microfiber cloth with a mild cleaning agent and dry wiping afterward.

Humidity in the room is also important: with too much moisture, the boards will swell to some extent regardless of how carefully you clean them.

Here is a short tutorial on how I regularly clean my Billy shelves without causing any damage:

1. Materials: soft microfiber cloth, a bowl of lukewarm water, a small amount of mild dish soap (e.g., washing-up liquid), and a second dry cloth.

2. Step: First, dust off the surface with the dry microfiber cloth.
3. Step: Dip the cloth in the soapy water and wring it out well until it is only damp.
4. Step: Gently wipe the surface without rubbing.
5. Step: Immediately follow with the dry cloth to remove any moisture.

Tips:
- Do not use scrubbers or abrasive cleaners.
- Test the solution on an inconspicuous spot if there are stains.
- Regular cleaning prevents heavy dirt buildup.

This way, the surface stays nice and well-maintained over time.

Very good advice!

I would like to add that when cleaning Billy shelves, you should also pay attention to the edges. The edges often swell with too much moisture because the melamine coating is less protected there.

So, when wiping the shelves, be careful not to get the edges too wet with the cloth and make sure to dry them quickly.

This significantly extends the lifespan of the shelves.

So when mopping the floors, make sure not to let the wet cloth sit directly on the edges, or dry them off quickly.

Thank you, risar, that’s really important information for me! I had already suspected that the edges are sensitive.

One last question from me: If I want to treat very stubborn sticky spots with a vinegar-water solution, how long can the cloth stay on the spot before I should wipe it off to avoid any damage?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far; it’s been very helpful.
