Hello everyone,

I’ve been thinking for a while about whether there are ways to customize IKEA Brimnes furniture more individually. This series is quite popular and functional, but I find it a bit too plain and standardized for my taste. Therefore, I’m interested in knowing if there are techniques, materials, or creative approaches to modify Brimnes pieces—such as dressers, beds, or wardrobes—so they gain a more personal, unique character. I’m not just thinking about simple paint changes, but also handles, surface finishing, additional functionalities, or custom decorations that give the furniture a special touch.

Has anyone had experience with such modifications or knows tricks that go beyond basic painting? I’m also curious about potential pitfalls when customizing this furniture, as well as advice on material compatibility or the durability of these changes.

Looking forward to your creative ideas and tips!

Hey parturan49,

great question! 😊 The Brimnes is definitely a piece of furniture that is solid but can really come alive with a bit of personal touch. I believe there are some really cool options that go beyond just painting. For example:

- Replacing the standard handles with vintage or designer versions – quick to do and a real eye-catcher
- Covering it with special films in wood or marble patterns, which gives you a lot of creative freedom
- Using fabric elements like upholstered surfaces or inserts on drawers
- Installing LED strips on the inside, especially effective with open shelves

Of course, you should make sure the furniture remains sturdy afterward, but other than that: grab the screwdriver! Sometimes it’s the little tweak that turns the furniture into a unique piece. 🙂

Hello everyone,

to address parturan49’s question from a more technical perspective: The Brimnes series is mostly made from particleboard with melamine-coated surfaces, which definitely affects customization options. This means that when applying paint or additional materials, the following points should be considered:

- Surface Preparation: The surface is not ideal for painting without proper preparation. Sanding with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 220) and applying a good primer are essential.

- Choice of Paint: Waxes or oils are less suitable because they do not penetrate the sealed surface well. Acrylic paints or special furniture paints with adhesion promoters work much better.

- Handles: Replacing the handles is a simple step that immediately changes the look – make sure to pay attention to the existing drill holes. There are universal handles with adjustable fittings, or you may need to drill new holes and properly fill old ones if you want to avoid visible leftover holes.

- Additional Mounting: Using thin wooden elements, called battens or risers, can enlarge or enhance the furniture piece. Pay attention to the screw length and load capacity to prevent swelling or breakage.

- Personalization with Lighting: Battery-operated or hardwired LEDs can create atmosphere, especially in display cabinets or open shelves.

Finally, a question for the original poster: Are you mainly interested in visual improvements, or are you also considering functional additions such as built-in organizers or hidden compartments?

I’d be happy to offer more specific advice once I know more about your goals.

I think that’s a good question. If it’s just about the appearance, repainting, new handles, and films would be the best choice. For functionality, custom builds or additions are better.
