Are there specific polishing pastes for KALLAX surfaces? I’m asking because I recently bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and would like to know the best way to care for the surface without damaging it. Some furniture finishes require special care products tailored to the material. Since the KALLAX shelf has a melamine-coated surface, I’m unsure whether regular polishing pastes are suitable or if special products are needed to remove scratches or simply to achieve a nice shine. Has anyone had experience or can recommend polishing pastes that are truly appropriate for KALLAX surfaces and what to watch out for?

Hello Par-la64,

I can understand why you’re asking this question. KALLAX surfaces, as you correctly guessed, are melamine-coated. This means they are quite durable but sensitive to harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. There is no polishing paste specifically made for IKEA’s KALLAX, but you can use products designed for melamine-coated furniture.

It is important not to use abrasive polishing pastes, as they can damage the surface. Silicone-based polishing pastes are often a good choice because they improve shine without harming the surface. Furniture care products with mild cleaners and a sealing effect can also help by masking minor scratches.

My advice: first test the product on an inconspicuous area, then work gently with a soft cloth and light polishing. If you have very deep scratches, polishing paste won’t help much – replacing the panel is usually the best option.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

There are no polishing pastes specifically made for KALLAX. Use mild furniture care products or polish designed for melamine surfaces. Choose the right product and avoid abrasive cleaners.

Very well explained! I think KALLAX is a real all-rounder, but when it comes to home care, people often expect too much at once. :-) The surface really only needs a little care and not an intensive treatment like real wood or high-gloss paint. Sometimes I just use furniture polish from the hardware store, which is also marketed for melamine-coated furniture. It makes the cabinet look great, almost like new, without having to worry about damaging the coating.

Polishing out scratches? That’s more wishful thinking with KALLAX, as the surface is too thick and cannot be re-polished. But for everyday use, the usual mild care products are good enough.

To answer your question directly: No, there are no special polishing pastes for KALLAX surfaces, and that’s actually a good thing. I believe the idea of having a specialized product for every surface is quite overrated. Melamine-coated surfaces are designed to be durable and low-maintenance. So why experiment unnecessarily with chemicals? A damp cloth and occasionally some mild furniture polish are more than enough.

Some people overdo it with care products and end up damaging the surface rather than protecting it. So, less is more. In my opinion, the notion that you need a special polish is completely overrated.

I can only agree with that. KALLAX is made for everyday use, not for high-gloss maintenance.

Exactly – you might be able to make minor scratches a bit less visible with special furniture polish products, but proper repair is difficult. At most, you can use small tricks to disguise scratches, such as furniture touch-up markers in matching colors or mild cleaners that help reduce contrast.

In conclusion, I would say: use gentle care products and avoid harsh polishing pastes. Furniture care with beeswax or specific melamine cleaning products works best. If the surface is scratched and you really want a fresh shine, only replacing the panel or applying a protective film can help.
