Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea that I use for my home office. Since I also like to keep plants and occasionally drinks on it, I’m wondering: Are there any special moisture-resistant sprays that can be applied to the surface of the KALLAX unit without affecting its appearance or material quality?

My goal is to protect the shelving unit from water stains, moisture, or light dirt, as the surface is melamine-coated and I’m not sure how resistant it is to liquids.

Has anyone had experience with such sprays or can recommend products suitable for furniture like the KALLAX? Thanks in advance!

Hello LOTILO,

to take a technically sound look at the subject: The melamine coating on the KALLAX shelving unit is generally a hard, scratch-resistant, and relatively water-repellent surface. The material itself hardly absorbs moisture, but the edges and joints are potential weak points.

Moisture-repellent sprays, which usually contain silanes or silicone-based compounds, form a layer on the surface that reduces water adhesion. It is important, however, that the spray does not impair breathability or make matte surfaces glossy if your KALLAX has a matte finish.

Before application:
- Test on an inconspicuous area
- Apply several thin layers instead of one thick layer
- Polish if necessary after the drying time

If you occasionally place drinks on the surface, often a protective coaster is sufficient. For longer-lasting protection, specialized anti-stain sprays from furniture care brands such as “Bona” or “WOODWAX” are recommended. You should check the ingredients; solvent-free products are better suited for melamine-coated surfaces.

If you like, I can gladly provide several specific product recommendations. I would also be interested to know how often and in what environment you need the protection.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! My KALLAX is placed near a window in my home office, where I often set down a coffee cup. I also have small plant pots with some soil, which can occasionally cause a bit of moisture.

The protection is intended to guard against occasional water splashes, condensation, and possible soil stains. Persistent dampness is unlikely, but I want to avoid staining or water marks. A change in appearance is not desired.

A recommendation for a spray that meets these requirements would be great.

Spray, das diese Anforderungen erfüllt

For your needs, I recommend the product "Bona Furniture and Laminate Protector." It is solvent-free, does not leave a glossy finish, and is specially designed for melamine-hard surfaces. The spray creates a thin protective film that repels water and light dirt.

Application: Clean the surface, apply the spray in a fine mist, allow it to work briefly, and polish if necessary.

This product has been recommended in various furniture care tests, including for furniture with melamine-coated surfaces like KALLAX. It is readily available from specialty stores or online.

If you are unsure, test it first on a hidden spot.
