ᐅ How can you restore cracked doors on Kallax units to look good again?

I have doors on my Kallax shelving unit that have become quite cracked over time. There are noticeable hairline cracks and small chips, especially along the edges and on the door surfaces. Now I’m wondering what the best way is to restore these cracked doors without completely replacing them. What methods or materials are suitable for making the surface stable again and visually appealing? Are there any recommendations for sanding, sealing, or special paints? I am particularly interested in a solution that is durable and preserves the typical Kallax appearance as much as possible.

Quick question for the original poster: How deep and large are the cracks?

Thanks for the detailed response! The cracks are mostly superficial, hairline cracks between 0.2 and 1 mm (0.008 and 0.04 inches) wide, but scattered across the door surface. There are also small chips at the edges, up to 3 mm (0.12 inches) in diameter. No large holes or significant deformations; it rather seems that the paint has aged too much and the material underneath has slightly shifted.

A primer sounds reasonable – can you recommend a specific product that works well with the Kallax MDF surface?

For MDF surfaces with hairline cracks and small chips, I recommend the following procedure: First, lightly sand the surface with 180-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion. Then use a flexible acrylic filler to fill the cracks, making sure the filler is suitable for MDF. After it has dried, sand smooth with 240-grit sandpaper.

As a primer, an acrylic furniture primer designed specifically for wood-based materials is suitable to ensure good adhesion of the finish coat.

To finish, I recommend a water-based furniture or acrylic paint, either matte or satin, depending on the desired look. These paints provide a durable, resistant surface. If needed, two thin coats are better than one thick coat to avoid cracking.

Important: Do not underestimate the importance of sanding between the paint layers.

Exactly, otherwise the paint may peel off after a short time or appear uneven. Always sand carefully with fine sandpaper (320 grit) before applying the next coat.

Here’s a little tip based on my gut feeling: If you prefer a cozy look, you can try using chalk paint after filling and sanding, and then just seal it with wax. This will give you a natural sheen – super easy and still very cool. 😊 Of course, this is not suitable for very smooth and glossy surfaces.

Wax is really a treat, in my opinion! 🙂 Especially if you don’t want too many layers of paint or varnish. It’s also easier to touch up if it gets scratched. This is particularly useful with Kallax, where doors are frequently opened. So, grab some filler and give it a try!

Thanks for all your previous advice! Yesterday, I prepared a small test area: I sanded all the cracks with 180-grit sandpaper, then applied a layer of flexible acrylic filler. Today, I plan to sand and then prime.

One last question before priming: Should I prime the entire door or only the areas with filler? I want to achieve as uniform a finish as possible later on.
