Hello everyone,

I have a KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea that I use for my home office. Since I also like to keep plants and occasionally drinks on it, I’m wondering: Are there any special moisture-resistant sprays that can be applied to the surface of the KALLAX unit without affecting its appearance or material quality?

My goal is to protect the shelving unit from water stains, moisture, or light dirt, as the surface is melamine-coated and I’m not sure how resistant it is to liquids.

Has anyone had experience with such sprays or can recommend products suitable for furniture like the KALLAX? Thanks in advance!

Hello LOTILO,

There are indeed water-repellent sprays available for melamine-coated furniture surfaces, usually found in furniture care products or as impregnating agents for wood and laminated surfaces. It is important that these sprays are silicone-free and suitable for indoor use to avoid discoloring or damaging the surface.

Common products are special furniture or laminate impregnators that create a thin water-repellent layer without altering the appearance. However, before applying it on a large area, you should test the spray on an inconspicuous spot.

In general, the KALLAX shelf is already quite resistant to moisture due to its melamine coating, but prolonged exposure to direct moisture should be avoided.

That may be true, but I doubt that such sprays make a significant difference in the long run. Often, these impregnations are either too thin or alter the surface in some way, causing more problems than benefits.

I see this more as a market selling people something they don’t really need. It’s better to be careful not to spill anything than to invest in a spray can.

I can understand both sides well here.

Especially when using KALLAX in children's areas or places where things often get wet, some kind of protection can be useful. My concern about stains or moisture is very high, so I have tried natural remedies like wood oil – but that doesn’t work for melamine-coated surfaces.

If there is a spray that provides good care and protection, that would be great, but I also know how frustrating it can be to buy something that doesn’t work. Maybe a combination helps: cleaning, a thin protective layer, and being careful.

Use furniture or laminate protector from the hardware store. Clean the surface thoroughly beforehand, then apply a thin layer and let it dry. There is no need to worry about the appearance if the product is designed for this purpose.

Plastic furniture like KALLAX generally does not require additional protection if you avoid stains.

If you still want some protection, these sprays usually only serve to conceal marks, not to completely repel moisture.
