Hello everyone,

I’m planning to customize one of my IKEA Brimnes furniture pieces to make it more unique. I’m interested in DIY projects involving these pieces, especially those that are particularly worthwhile or truly feasible. Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to enhance Brimnes furniture in a practical and sustainable way? I’m especially curious about projects that add real value, not just aesthetically but also functionally. Are there any tips for reinforcing, adding to, or cleverly modifying them?

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions!

The Brimnes system is characterized by modular simplicity.

Thank you for the precise summary; that is very helpful for planning.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone has experimented with the surface finish, such as staining or creative painting, without compromising the quality.

Has anyone had experience with the surface treatment of Brimnes furniture? I have some doubts since the veneer seems very thin, and I don’t want the surfaces to become blotchy from sanding or staining. I was more thinking of a matte paint or chalk paint.

About Surfaces:

The surface of Brimnes is usually melamine-coated, which makes sanding difficult and can result in unevenness. Therefore, I recommend applying special chalk paints or acrylic coatings directly onto the clean and degreased surface instead of sanding. These adhere well and enhance the appearance attractively.

A matte finish or chalk paint often looks very high-quality and is also suitable for beginners.

Important: Always use a primer beforehand. Be cautious with stains, as melamine absorbs little and the result can be blotchy. In such cases, it is better to use thin veneer sheets or adhesive films if a wood look is desired.

I can confirm that! About a year ago, I tried to stain a Brimnes dresser, and it looked very uneven. Since then, I’ve painted it with chalk paint and am much happier with the result.

I think DIY is really fun, especially when small changes can make a big difference. Just try things out and don’t be too perfectionist!

Before applying any paint or varnish, furniture should be thoroughly cleaned and lightly sanded. This ensures better adhesion and a clean finish.

Chalk paint generally adheres well to Brimnes, as long as you lightly sand it first. I haven’t had any issues with it.

For anyone looking to implement the lighting project: there are very slim LED strips that are easy to install and operate on 12V. They can be attached to the inside sides or underneath shelves. Many of them are dimmable and offer color-changing options.

It hardly gets easier than this, and it visually and functionally enhances the furniture units.
