Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the PLATSA systems from IKEA and am wondering if anyone has detailed information about the differences between the older and newer PLATSA models. I am especially interested in whether the construction, material quality, or modularity have noticeably changed. Additionally, it would be helpful to know if the new models differ in terms of assembly, expandability, or compatibility with older PLATSA cabinet elements. If anyone has experience using older models combined with newer parts, it would be great if you could share your insights. Thank you in advance!

A combination of older and newer Platsa modules is generally possible, but it should be approached with caution. The main issues usually arise at connection points, which can vary slightly, and with door hinges, which may differ in shape and mounting.

My advice: If you plan to mix these modules, it’s best to get all the necessary screws, connectors, and hinges as spare parts from IKEA or check if universal alternatives fit. Sometimes, you may need to improvise a little during assembly, for example by using additional brackets or longer screws to ensure stability.

It is also advisable to test all parts before final assembly, especially doors and drawers, as these often show the biggest fit differences.

The new PLATSA series features improved door hinges and the installed cam connectors are more robust. Mixing old and new parts works, but requires extra effort during assembly. The dimensions are almost the same, but not 100% identical.

I am planning a PLATSA wardrobe that is about 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide and 40 cm (15.7 inches) deep. The focus is on an older model (from around 2013) that I want to partially expand with new modules, especially regarding doors and drawers.

To conclude, I would like to highlight a few important points when expanding with new parts:

- Door fronts: Newer doors often use different mounting systems and have slightly altered hinge positions. Therefore, it can be advisable to replace all doors to ensure a uniform appearance and proper function.

- Drawers: Drawer slides have evolved and are often more robust now, which can cause issues when mixing different generations.

- Load capacity and stability: Newer models have stronger connections, so when assembling, especially with larger combinations, additional stabilizers should be considered.

Conclusion: Combining old and new parts is generally possible, but to maintain comfort and consistent functionality, a full replacement is usually beneficial. If you only want to replace individual elements, it’s recommended to get all the new connecting parts and test whether the fit works without modifications.
