BuboklaHello everyone,
I am currently exploring whether there are smart IKEA PLATSA DIY solutions that are especially suitable for pet supplies. My goal is to create a modular, functional, and visually appealing storage or furnishing solution that works well for both cat and dog accessories – from feeding stations and toys to hygiene products or a small cozy corner.
I know the PLATSA range is very flexible, but unfortunately, I can hardly find concrete examples or tested DIY concepts that are specifically tailored to pet needs.
Does anyone have experience with DIY projects using PLATSA for pet supplies? What ideas have you implemented or heard of? Are there any clever tips to make the most of the modular system advantage specifically for pet products, without ending up with just ordinary cabinets? I look forward to your concrete suggestions, preferably including recommendations on materials, modifications, or useful accessories that can be easily integrated.

Hello Bubokla,
Based on your requirements, I would recommend the following DIY approach using PLATSA:
- Step 1: Assemble a base from PLATSA carcasses, taking advantage of the different compartment depths for specific storage needs (e.g., pet food versus toys).
- Step 2: Use plastic inserts or custom-made compartments (for example, cut-to-size plexiglass) that are easy to clean.
- Step 3: Integrate a false panel for the litter box area by building a sliding door or a pull-out front. Make sure there is enough ventilation to allow proper air circulation.
Common mistakes:
- No ventilation under the litter box, which causes odor problems.
- Drawers that are too tight, making access difficult.
- Skipping non-slip mats for feeding bowls.
Summary: PLATSA works great if you use its flexibility and combine plastic or metal inserts. This significantly increases its practical value.

I like the approach of not losing sight of the aesthetic aspect. Especially when it comes to pet accessories, I think it’s important that the space doesn’t turn into just a “storage area.” I once tried to create a corner using PLATSA for my dog supplies, but I had the problem that access to the bowls was quite inconvenient, and the containers were difficult to clean. It would be great if someone could also share their mistakes to learn from them. Sometimes you feel alone with these annoying issues.
I always find it helpful when discussions don’t just show the polished solutions but also openly reveal the stumbling blocks.

I strongly recommend measuring the exact dimensions of your pet supplies before starting—standard sizes are often underestimated (e.g., food bowls or litter boxes). PLATSA has fairly fixed module sizes, so you may need to work with custom cuts or additional shelves.
Here is a step-by-step suggestion:
- First, plan the space requirements for the main resources: feeding station, sleeping area, storage.
- Use narrow drawers or flaps for smaller accessories.
- For litter boxes, a PLATSA corner with ventilation openings (inserts with ventilation grilles or drilled holes) is suitable.
- Make sure materials are moisture-resistant, for example, waterproof films or inserts made of polypropylene (PP) plastic.
Common mistakes:
- Simply snapping pieces together without precise measurements.
- Lack of ventilation in closed compartments.
- Overlooking easy cleaning options (e.g., no removable tray under food bowls).
Could you provide more information about the types and sizes of your pets? Then I can give more specific advice.

Are there clever ways to use the modular system specifically for pet products without ending up with just regular cabinets? I look forward to your specific suggestions and, ideally, tips on materials, modifications, or useful accessories that are easy to integrate.Hello Bubokla,
I use PLATSA myself for a multifunctional dog corner. Here are the features I incorporated:
- A lower drawer with water and food bowls placed on a pull-out, easy-to-clean plastic tray.
- Middle compartments with modular boxes that I fill individually depending on the season and needs.
- At the top, a holder for leashes and toys with small hooks, which I mounted inside the doors using perforated panels.
Regarding materials, I recommend using waterproof inserts and durable plastics for feeding areas, as cleaning quickly becomes difficult otherwise.
Important:
- Don’t forget ventilation. Pets need fresh air, especially if your pet supplies include textiles (blankets, sleeping areas).
- I also used soft liners so the bowls don’t slip while the pet is eating.
The PLATSA system offers a lot of flexibility when using the right inserts. It’s definitely worth customizing!
