ᐅ Are there any tips for making Ikea Metod drawers easier to open?

Rory49Hello everyone,
I have installed Ikea Metod drawers in my kitchen and have noticed that they are increasingly difficult to open and close. The sliding is no longer smooth, and although I don’t overload the drawers, they feel somewhat stiff.
I’m interested to know if anyone has tips or practical experience on how to improve the ease of use of Metod drawers. In particular, I’d like to know:
- Are there recommended care or maintenance procedures?
- Does anyone use specific lubricants that have proven effective (e.g., silicone spray or other products)?
- Are mechanical adjustments to the drawer slide or runner advisable?
- Or are there general tips I should keep in mind to ensure smooth operation over the long term?
I look forward to your helpful advice – thank you in advance!

Regarding your question: Ikea Metod drawers usually use ball-bearing slides that require regular maintenance to run smoothly.
- Cleaning: First, remove any debris and dust from the drawer slides.
- Lubrication: Preferably use silicone spray. It is non-sticky and provides long-lasting smoothness. Avoid WD-40 or other oily products, as they tend to attract dirt.
- Adjustment: Check that the drawers are properly aligned and sit straight in the slides, since misalignment can negatively affect operation.
If the drawers are still difficult to open, there may be a defect in the rollers or ball bearings. In that case, consider replacing the damaged parts.
In summary: clean, lightly lubricate with silicone spray, and check alignment—this solves most issues.

I think it is important to critically assess the mechanical condition as well. Using silicone spray alone is not very helpful if, for example, the drawers are misaligned on the sides or the slides are warped.
I agree with that. Therefore, I would recommend checking the entire structure for fit and accuracy. Under load, this can be different than when empty. What tips do you have for precise measuring or alignment?

- Fully pull out the drawer
- Measure the drawer box on the sides and check for evenness
- Then check the guide rails to see if they are installed parallel
Most Metod rails can be easily readjusted by loosening them at the mounting points and realigning. This helps to minimize jamming and friction.
Exactly. Maintenance alone isn’t enough if the mechanics aren’t right.

Hey, I used to underestimate how important cleaning and using the right lubricant are!
Since I started using silicone spray, the drawers glide like butter. 🧈 I also find that the drawers feel much better when they aren’t loaded with too much weight! Just give it a try, it’s really satisfying when they slide smoothly again! 😊
