Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to retrofit soft-close mechanisms on my IKEA Platsa units because the doors close a bit loudly and harshly. Is there anyone here who has experience with adding soft-close features to Platsa cabinets? I’m particularly interested in which soft-close fittings or dampers are compatible, if there is anything specific to consider regarding the existing hinges, and how difficult the installation is. Additionally, it would be helpful to get tips on selecting the right damping strength to ensure the doors are neither too stiff nor too loose.

I have noticed that many people use retrofit kits in other kitchens, but Platsa seems a bit special due to the hinge design and cabinet boxes. Thanks for your advice and experiences!

The Soft-Close Damper from BLUM, designed for standard hinges, often fits Platsa cabinets. This allows you to upgrade your existing hinges. Installation is simple: just click the damper into place, and you’re done. Make sure to choose the correct type, usually for standard opening. You generally don’t need to adjust the damping force, as it is suitable for regular doors.

Hello Tarlo4,

to retrofit soft-close functionality on IKEA Platsa efficiently and permanently, I recommend first identifying the existing hinges precisely. Platsa uses standardized hinges, but they are somewhat different in design compared to classic BLUM hinges. Therefore, it is essential to choose compatible soft-close units specifically designed for this type of hinge.

Technically, the retrofit process is as follows:

- First, remove the cabinet door and carefully measure the hinge on the cabinet frame or door
- Then look for a suitable soft-close unit, preferably from BLUM Tipp-On or Hettich
- The units are usually mounted on the front of the hinge, often using a clip system, meaning no drilling or screwing is required
- Afterwards, test the function to ensure the door closes softly and quietly

It is important to select dampers with the appropriate strength. Platsa doors are generally not very heavy, so the weakest damper setting is usually sufficient; otherwise, the movement can become too stiff. Too strong damping can also cause gaps if the door gets stuck in a partially open position.

One question: How much experience do you have with installations? Do you have the right tools and enough time for precise work? Even small errors when positioning the soft-close units can later cause malfunctions.

I hope this helps! If you like, I can also share tips for alternative products I have personally tested.

I completely agree! I once tried a universal set, and suddenly the doors felt like a heavy safe door – not exactly pleasant for everyday use 😅. Better to use the suitable "soft close" damper for lightweight doors, that way the feel stays really smooth.

Also: when installing, make sure the hinges are properly aligned – sometimes a few small adjustments are needed to make the closing action silky smooth.

Good luck with the renovation – then opening and closing will finally be enjoyable! 😉
