Are there any specific care tips for the surface of Billy shelves? I have owned several BILLY shelves in the classic white finish for some time now. I have noticed that while the surface seems durable, it also appears quite sensitive to certain cleaning agents and mechanical wear. Therefore, I am interested in any recommendations for cleaning and maintenance—for example, which cleaning products to avoid, the best way to remove dust, or how to treat minor scratches. Are there also any practical experiences on how to keep the surface looking good over the long term? Any advice or guidance would be really helpful, as I want to keep the shelves in optimal condition.

Avoid aggressive solvents such as nitro thinner, acetone, or abrasive cleaners

Thank you very much for the tip! I was especially interested in how the surface holds up in everyday use – with children and tables nearby, spills can happen quickly.

Small surface scratches can be treated with a furniture repair marker or wax stick.

I will definitely give that a try. Is there a specific type of wax stick you would recommend? I thought they work well on wood, but does that also apply to melamine-coated chipboard?

Hello Lomego, the furniture wax crayons you find at hardware stores are usually suitable for various surfaces, including melamine. It’s important to choose a color that matches your shelf. I wouldn’t recommend using a very dark wood treatment if your shelf is white or light-colored. Be sure to test the crayon on an inconspicuous spot before treating larger areas. Some people also use special repair kits for furniture with melamine-coated surfaces, which often include waxes or pastes. These can be really effective at concealing minor scratches.
