Are there any specific care tips for the surface of Billy shelves? I have owned several BILLY shelves in the classic white finish for some time now. I have noticed that while the surface seems durable, it also appears quite sensitive to certain cleaning agents and mechanical wear. Therefore, I am interested in any recommendations for cleaning and maintenance—for example, which cleaning products to avoid, the best way to remove dust, or how to treat minor scratches. Are there also any practical experiences on how to keep the surface looking good over the long term? Any advice or guidance would be really helpful, as I want to keep the shelves in optimal condition.

I really like how many great tips come together here! 🙂 Another little insider tip from me: For occasional care, you can use furniture polish designed for plastic furniture – it protects and gives the surface a nice shine. But don’t overdo it, once a quarter is more than enough. And stay away from harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners – they’re more likely to cause scratches than provide care!

Hello everyone, I would like to organize the tips a bit to provide clarity:

1. Cleaning: Use a soft, slightly damp cloth. Ideally, a microfiber cloth.
2. Cleaning agents: Use a mild dishwashing detergent; avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners.
3. Wiping dry: Always dry thoroughly to avoid overloading the melamine coating with water.
4. Stains: Treat fresh stains immediately; do not let them soak.
5. Scratches: Minor surface scratches can be treated with a furniture touch-up pen or wax stick. Avoid aggressive polishes!
6. Long-term care: Use plastic furniture care products as infrequently as possible, about once per quarter.

Please note: The Billy shelves are mainly made of particleboard with a melamine coating. The material is durable but not indestructible.

I want to emphasize exactly that. People often underestimate that although the surface appears to be oiled or lacquered, it is actually a plastic coating. Therefore, avoid using water-based cleaning agents with harsh additives and minimize mechanical stress. I also recommend not placing hot objects directly on the shelves, as the surface can be sensitive to heat.

Exactly, this is a point many people overlook. Hot coffee cups or irons placed directly on the surface can cause permanent damage. To avoid this, use coasters or small felt pads. This greatly extends the lifespan and keeps the surface smooth and attractive.

I think it’s important to take a relaxed approach to maintenance. 🙂 Shelves need to withstand everyday use, and if you clean them regularly without using harsh cleaners, you’ll be on the safe side. To hide scratches, wax sticks from hardware stores work very well – they usually make the marks barely noticeable. And for those who prefer an easier routine: regular dusting is already half the battle 😉

Good morning everyone! 🙂 I wanted to revisit the topic of dust – I’ve made it a habit to dust my BILLY shelves at least once a week with a dust cloth. This way, you don’t even have to consider using harsh cleaning products. Plus, the shelves always look fresh! I’ve also noticed that even small scratches hardly stand out when the surface is otherwise clean and well-maintained.
