Hello everyone, I am currently planning to expand my Ikea PAX wardrobe, but I don’t want to simply buy additional PAX wardrobes to put next to each other. Instead, I am looking for good IKEA hacks to extend or modify my existing PAX system.

Specifically, I am interested in clever and practical solutions to use the storage space more efficiently, possibly through the use of add-on modules, custom-built connectors, or modifications that increase the flexibility and functionality of my PAX system.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to expand the system without buying entirely new wardrobes? Maybe there are tips for making better use of the existing space with simple adjustments or for improving the PAX both visually and functionally?

I would appreciate any ideas that are as detailed as possible so I can get a clear picture before I start.

Good morning, this is an interesting topic, especially because PAX – despite its modular design – sometimes reaches its limits when you want to go beyond the standard configuration.

Here are my tips that have proven effective in practice:

- Connections between individual units: Using connection brackets or custom-made wooden strips creates a solid unit that prevents the modules from drifting apart and provides stability.

- Height increase with intermediate elements: You can insert stackable boxes or small shelving units between cabinets to gain vertical space. This can be neatly concealed with a small trim frame.

- Interior optimization: Use adjustable shelves, drawers, and especially accessories such as belt holders or shoe boxes, which are specifically available for PAX. Hanging systems or additional clothing rods for double height are also very effective.

- Custom-built modules: A popular solution is to attach individual doors like cabinet doors to homemade frames, for example to create a wall cabinet above the PAX.

Trims, handles, and lighting complete the setup and enhance both comfort and appearance.

A common mistake is to underestimate stability – when planning extensions or add-on solutions, always consider anchoring to prevent tipping.

I hope this helps as a rough guide. If desired, I can also describe individual steps with pictures and measurements.

As a supplement, it should be noted that PAX systems have inherent limitations regarding width and height due to their construction. Extensions should always consider the maximum load capacity of the cabinet structure.

A common and worthwhile IKEA hack involves integrating additional shelves and inner drawers from third-party suppliers. These sometimes offer higher load capacity or different dimensions compared to original IKEA components, allowing for better-organized storage.

Equally important is the correct wall mounting, especially for extensions and upper units, to ensure stability.

Regarding the connection of multiple PAX units: metal brackets and screws in the back panel are effective and prevent twisting. Cutting and gluing wooden strips to size is an alternative, as long as the material does not absorb moisture.

Important: No hack should impede the function of doors and drawers. Additionally, IKEA’s instructions should always be used as a basis to avoid compatibility issues.

That’s a tip I like because it helps even when space is limited and makes the cabinet more visually appealing.

I personally extended my PAX with a low topper shelf that I attached to both the wall and the cabinet frame – this not only adds storage space but also creates a visual unit that looks less bulky.

However, I understand well that you don’t want any unpleasant surprises regarding stability. A friend of mine didn’t allow enough drying time when gluing the trim, which eventually resulted in an unstable construction.

Another question is how to handle possible color or material adjustments. In my opinion, good hacks pay attention to complementing the IKEA design rather than disrupting its look.

I’m interested in which links or sources you know for good combinations, even if no pictures can be shared.
