Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of my IKEA Platsa system and have come across the standard assembly screws with some questions. While these screws are basically suitable, I am wondering if there are practical alternatives that might be of higher quality, more durable, or easier to handle. I am especially interested in whether there are replacement screws that hold better or are more suitable for assembly without compromising stability or warranty.

Does anyone in the community have experience with other types or sizes of screws that can be used with PLATSA? Perhaps recommendations for specific brands or materials? I want to avoid the connection weakening over time or having unsightly screw heads visible.

Thank you in advance for any constructive tips and advice!

There are no real alternatives to the original IKEA screws, as the system is designed specifically for them. If needed, you can use high-quality Spax screws of the same size. It is important that they have the exact same dimensions to avoid damaging the joints.

In addition: The standard assembly screws supplied by IKEA for PLATSA are generally optimally sized in terms of length, diameter, and thread type to ensure a secure connection. When using replacement screws, the following points must be considered:

- Thread pitch and type (usually wood thread) must be identical
- Screw length should not be too long to avoid bulging or damage to the material
- Screw material should be rust-resistant, such as galvanized steel or stainless steel

For special requirements, e.g., increased load capacity or aesthetic adjustments, screws with countersunk heads and matching drive (e.g., Torx) are recommended. These improve stability and prevent over-torquing during assembly.

In general, there is little objection to using higher-quality screws as long as compatibility is maintained and no modifications are made to the drill holes or channels in the furniture.

Why always use the original IKEA screws, which often feel cheap and not very sturdy? If you think a bit further, you could switch to better connection methods – such as cam connectors, wooden dowels, or eccentric connectors, which many people use for DIY projects or with other systems.

Of course, this sounds more complicated than a simple screw at first – but in the long run, it is more stable, looks better, and is especially more flexible when making modifications. So, if you’re really looking for something better than the standard assembly screws for PLATSA, you might consider changing the entire assembly method. It takes more effort but is worth it in terms of quality.

What do you think? Do you stick with the regular screws, or are you also looking for alternative connectors?
