ᐅ Are vegetable gardens no longer desired?

Hello everyone!

Yesterday, I marked out the area for our vegetable garden in the yard—about 30sqm (320 sq ft) in total. We’re also adding a greenhouse of around 16sqm (170 sq ft). A small “kitchen garden,” as I would call it.

I got some curious looks from the neighbor, wondering if I’m going fully self-sufficient now.

When I look around new housing developments these days, it’s mostly gravel yards, boxwood shrubs, and solar spheres, while the robotic lawnmower glides over the sterile golf-course-like lawns.

Are there still any enthusiastic gardeners left who quickly dash through the garden before work to pick snails and weed?

I’m a bit sad that I don’t have like-minded people around me. Even my wife is completely opposed to gardening. Such a pity!

Best regards,

Shrub or tree?
How was it positioned? Windless? Sunny or partly shaded?

Hmm, according to Wikipedia, it is a tree. So it probably was one. It stood... hmm, in front of a house wall and had sun from noon until sunset. I would also say it was rather sheltered from the wind in that spot.

There are hardly any left, probably because they attract a lot of wasps

Unfortunately, links are not allowed, but this incident from the neighboring town comes to mind.

Try googling: "Pear tree at Vorster elementary school remains standing" First result from RP-online or NGZ

I'm surprised humanity is still alive.

If wasps become a nuisance, fallen fruit must be collected. It is also better for the trees.

I cannot say that there are more wasps in my parents’ garden, despite having a plum tree and lots of fallen fruit.

What would you do? Due to an allergy, all berries have been banned from our garden. So the usual snacking on berries while passing by is not an option. Would you simply plant bush trees in the lawn or place columnar fruit trees on the terrace?
I would like to offer alternatives like plums, cherries, peaches, etc.

It depends on what your plot of land allows.
