ᐅ Are vegetable gardens no longer desired?

Hello everyone!

Yesterday, I marked out the area for our vegetable garden in the yard—about 30sqm (320 sq ft) in total. We’re also adding a greenhouse of around 16sqm (170 sq ft). A small “kitchen garden,” as I would call it.

I got some curious looks from the neighbor, wondering if I’m going fully self-sufficient now.

When I look around new housing developments these days, it’s mostly gravel yards, boxwood shrubs, and solar spheres, while the robotic lawnmower glides over the sterile golf-course-like lawns.

Are there still any enthusiastic gardeners left who quickly dash through the garden before work to pick snails and weed?

I’m a bit sad that I don’t have like-minded people around me. Even my wife is completely opposed to gardening. Such a pity!

Best regards,

Thuja hedges are great. That slight cemetery vibe always brings peace to a housing development.

No wonder nobody wants to be buried in cemeteries like those anymore. 😉

Huh? As a farmer, I might actually be thankful if city people and their kids kept bothering me regularly.

In our area, this is called a children’s and youth farm, which is actually an association. Here is an example of some of the activities offered:
  • sowing, tending, and harvesting in the garden area
  • building with saws and hammers in the construction area
  • playing with mud and dirt
  • running around on our beautiful grounds
  • baking bread on sticks over the campfire

There are also animals you can sponsor.

Our child sees it as completely natural that an animal has to be slaughtered/eaten when someone else is hungry. .

I know that feeling 🙂

Thanks, Bieber. I’ll go ahead and plan some in.
My mother swears by tomato plants in pots in front of the bedroom window and next to the balcony doors. Tomatoes are said to repel most mosquitoes.

Tomatoes must not be watered from above, otherwise you get blight.

Our apricot tree didn't survive the late frost last year 🙁
But I would buy one again.

By the way, dwarf fruit trees only need 1sqm (11 sq ft) in the garden, but you need two of them, and oh dear, that already takes 2–3sqm (22–32 sq ft) away from the garden... or does a small garden “grow” somewhat through planting, since people perceive in 3D? 😉

People say that a garden designed in distinct areas looks larger than a garden that is not planned.
And you don’t really need a big lawn if you can go anywhere you want... like a farm as well as a football pitch 😉

I can understand, though, if you don’t feel like preserving kilos of fruit, because that can really turn into a lot of work. I also let the birds enjoy some of the harvest since I don’t always have the time. That’s not a problem. I’m not talking about an obligation or necessity, but about an enrichment.

.

Okay, a few small fruit trees are included :-)

They are kept dry at my mother’s place. Otherwise, I didn’t know that. I have a black thumb, at least when it comes to houseplants.
