ᐅ Are vegetable gardens no longer desired?

Hello everyone!
Yesterday, I marked out the area for our vegetable garden in the yard—about 30sqm (320 sq ft) in total. We’re also adding a greenhouse of around 16sqm (170 sq ft). A small “kitchen garden,” as I would call it.
I got some curious looks from the neighbor, wondering if I’m going fully self-sufficient now.
When I look around new housing developments these days, it’s mostly gravel yards, boxwood shrubs, and solar spheres, while the robotic lawnmower glides over the sterile golf-course-like lawns.
Are there still any enthusiastic gardeners left who quickly dash through the garden before work to pick snails and weed?
I’m a bit sad that I don’t have like-minded people around me. Even my wife is completely opposed to gardening. Such a pity!
Best regards,
daniels87

To Evolith's dwarf: Don’t worry, I’m almost 60, quite healthy, and have managed to do so largely without fruit and vegetables. Thanks [emoji16] I take comfort from my brother. He survived his first 15 years eating salami sandwiches, Nutella toast, and pasta. Now he’s over a head taller than me.@chand1986
And inspired by the fond memories of my grandfather, who had a greenhouse, I now have one too. I didn’t spend much time with him there, but I secretly looked at his house and the plants. I liked the garden beds with paths between them and the greenery peeking out from the piled-up beds...
There are always excuses 😉
A raised bed actually fits into any garden and takes up very little space.
For the first four years, I planted two squares of one square meter (about 10.8 square feet) each.
That’s enough. Plus, in perennial beds, chives for quark and mint for mojitos. I once grew herbs for the Frankfurt green sauce because you don’t get them easily here... Oh yes, rosemary for cooking shouldn’t be missing either 🙂
Everything has its time. You can start small and expand. The children enjoy it, we get organic products, and it’s good training [emoji1594]♀️ [emoji1320]
Ours is a Juliana greenhouse.
We ordered it from gartenxxl during August/September when there was a 10% discount and the foundation frame was included.
It’s also available with real glass, but we chose the 10mm (0.4 inch) twin-wall polycarbonate panels on purpose.

Hello,
many people commute, have children, want to go on holiday. A vegetable garden always requires work, even on vacation. I see this with my father-in-law.
We only have a herb spiral.
There are always excuses 😉

Alternatively, there are farms for children where all kinds of things are grown. But we won’t have just lawn in our garden either; we just don’t have the right plot for tomatoes and potatoes.

... A large vegetable bed is coming, but only next year or the year after. And I love greenhouses! @ypg where did you get yours?
...
For the kids, it’s simply great to go into the garden and snack on currants or raspberries, or make jam or syrup with me from them.

I got questioning looks from the neighbor. Like, am I becoming self-sufficient now.
... Just wait a few more weeks. Then he’ll be looking at your beans and tomatoes with envy. At that point, I’d invite him to help with the harvest and encourage him to try it himself. Before you know it, you’ll have started a trend, and the turf will be dug up again. 😉

You can’t really calculate the cost of the vegetables over 10 years for such an investment, can you?No, even though arugula, like many other things, grows in regular soil and only needs rainwater.
Arugula comes back every year, as do mint and chives, without any extra effort.
The only thing is the greenhouse, but it also serves as a design element in the garden, and looks great from every angle. It’s an eye-catcher that is probably still cheaper overall than extra wind protection, a garden storage box, etc.
Or are you including the land value? [emoji1]
We didn’t buy that separately; it’s part of our property [emoji6]
I don’t count water costs or labor time when it’s a hobby, otherwise I wouldn’t cook but always eat out. At an hourly rate of 40€ that would actually be cheaper for me.
When doing a cost projection, everyone should also reconsider their expensive Bora ventilation system, their Thermomix, or other pricey gadgets, as well as their gas grill [emoji6]
For me, the last harvest from the greenhouse was genuinely convenient: I seldom needed to go to the supermarket to buy cucumbers and tomatoes.
