ᐅ Adjusting BILLY Shelf Doors: How Can I Make Them Hang Straight?

redameoHello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy shelf unit with doors from IKEA and noticed while assembling that the doors cannot be adjusted to hang straight and flush, despite several attempts. Specifically, one door is slightly crooked, causing a small gap to appear at the top hinge when closing, while the bottom part is already flush. Even after adjusting the known screws on the hinges, I can’t achieve a truly satisfactory result.
Could someone please explain step-by-step how to properly adjust the doors of the BILLY shelf so they close straight and flush? Are there any tips on which screws to adjust first, or specific techniques to keep in mind? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,
I’m happy to give you a brief guide on how to adjust doors so they are aligned properly:
1. Open the door fully.
2. Locate the two screws on the hinge. The front screw (usually the smaller one) controls the depth, while the rear screw controls the height.
3. First, adjust the height using the rear screw until the door is approximately level.
4. Then, adjust the depth with the front screw until the gap between the cabinet and the door is even.
It often helps to adjust both doors one after the other and check in between if they close correctly. Some people make the mistake of adjusting everything on one door and forget about the second one!
A common mistake is using too much force, which can damage the screws. Proceed carefully and make light adjustments multiple times if necessary.
Best regards!

One important point that many overlook: The BILLY shelf itself must be perfectly level. Use a spirit level to check if the frame is flat and straight. If the shelf is tilted, you won’t be able to adjust the doors properly.
Also, some doors have minimal manufacturing tolerances from the factory. If a door is hanging extremely crooked and cannot be corrected, inspect the fittings for damage or bent metal parts.
Check if washers can be used in the hinges as well; some models allow small adjustments this way.

The BILLY doors can be adjusted using the two adjustment screws on the hinge: one screw for vertical positioning, the other for depth. Thanks, that was helpful. But I took a closer look and it seems there are actually three screws on the hinge?
I would like to understand what the third screw is for and whether it could be relevant for the door hanging crooked. If so, how do I adjust it?
I want to try if I can really fine-tune the door this way, including some detailed effects of each screw if possible.
Looking forward to more precise guidance!
