Hello everyone,
I am currently working on planning my new wardrobe system and wanted to ask if there are any variants of the Ikea PAX doors that come with magnetic closures, or if it is possible to retrofit such closures. My main concern is that the doors close securely without the typical sticking or catching, especially when they are not perfectly aligned.
So, are there official PAX doors with a magnetic locking mechanism, or does anyone know of recommended solutions that work well with them? If only retrofit options are available, it would be great if you could share specific models or tips that fit the PAX doors well.
Thanks for your experience and advice!

As far as I know, Ikea does not offer PAX doors with integrated magnetic catches. Standard doors usually come with conventional snap-lock or push-to-open mechanisms that do not include magnets.
If you want a magnetic catch solution, it can generally be achieved using separate magnetic catches available at hardware stores. It is important to pay attention to the dimensions to ensure they are not visible and work properly through the door construction.
From my own experience, I recommend installing them inside the door frame, as this looks cleaner and lasts longer.
However, if you are specifically looking for original PAX parts, you will not find a suitable magnetic solution directly from Ikea.

I can explain this in a bit more detail if that would be helpful for you.
PAX doors from Ikea mainly come with passive locking components, such as clip locks or simple catch mechanisms, which are not magnetic.
A magnetic catch works by mounting a magnet on the door and a metal plate on the cabinet frame (or vice versa), which attract each other. This results in a smooth but secure closing, which is especially useful if the door sticks slightly or is not perfectly aligned.
If you want to retrofit this, keep in mind:
- The strength of the magnets: too weak is ineffective, too strong makes opening difficult.
- The positioning: magnetic catches should be thin and flat; otherwise, they are visible or interfere with the inside of the door.
- Material compatibility: some PAX doors are veneered or painted, which makes it difficult to screw them securely.
Many users choose small neodymium magnets with mounting plates or special magnetic catches available at hardware or furniture supply stores.
Unfortunately, there is no integrated solution directly from Ikea.
If you’re interested, I can also provide tips on installation.

Additional information:
I have reviewed various types of PAX doors, including wooden doors, glass frame doors, and sliding doors. None of these systems come factory-equipped with magnetic closures. The locking mechanisms are usually based on mechanical latch systems or push-to-open springs.
Retrofitting with magnetic catches is generally possible and is often used to improve closing convenience. It is recommended to:
- Use anti-pinch magnets specifically designed for furniture
- Be careful with positioning to facilitate later door adjustments
- Always check the door thickness and material before drilling to avoid damage
In the case of sliding doors, traditional locks are often not necessary, as these doors are guided by a track system.
Conclusion: There is neither an official IKEA product nor a standard solution for magnetic PAX door closures. In practice, however, magnetic catches can be a useful retrofit option.
