ᐅ Are there IKEA PAX doors with magnetic closures?

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on planning my new wardrobe system and wanted to ask if there are any variants of the Ikea PAX doors that come with magnetic closures, or if it is possible to retrofit such closures. My main concern is that the doors close securely without the typical sticking or catching, especially when they are not perfectly aligned.

So, are there official PAX doors with a magnetic locking mechanism, or does anyone know of recommended solutions that work well with them? If only retrofit options are available, it would be great if you could share specific models or tips that fit the PAX doors well.

Thanks for your experience and advice!

Hello,

I would like to take a systematic look at this topic. For anyone who might have similar questions, here is a brief guide on retrofitting magnetic catches on Pax doors:

1. Material selection: Small neodymium magnets with metal plates specifically designed for furniture work best.
2. Positioning:
- Attach the metal plate to the inside of the door frame
- Place the magnet on the cabinet body, exactly opposite
Make sure the magnets sit flush and do not protrude.
3. Installation:
- Carefully mark the drilling points on the door before drilling
- Check for smooth opening motion after installation
- Stronger magnets can make opening more difficult; consider using stronger spring hinges if necessary

Summary: Although Ikea does not offer Pax doors with magnetic catches, retrofitting magnetic latches is very feasible and significantly improves convenience. The main challenge remains the precise positioning and choosing the right magnetic system.

This results in a smooth but firm closing, which is especially beneficial if the door is slightly sticking or not perfectly aligned.

I can fully agree with that! Especially with older PAX systems, where the doors are no longer perfectly aligned, a magnetic catch is very helpful to prevent annoying slamming or the door staying slightly open.

At first, I was concerned about the opening resistance, but after installing suitable magnetic catches, closing has become noticeably more comfortable, all without much effort or visible changes.

In my opinion, it is also important to take your time during installation to ensure the magnets fit precisely.

Hello,

As several people have already mentioned here, based on my own experience and in addition to previous answers, I can confirm that Ikea PAX does not offer doors with integrated magnetic locks. Simple push-to-open systems or mechanical catches are standard.

For retrofitting, small flat magnetic catches commonly used in furniture construction are a good option. These can be found at hardware stores or specialty suppliers. They are unobtrusive and do not affect functionality. Proper installation is important to ensure the catch holds securely but also operates smoothly.

If you have any questions about installation, I’m happy to help.

I completely agree with this. When retrofitting, you should take the time to measure accurately and use tools such as templates or alignment devices to avoid misalignments. This is the only way to ensure that magnetic catches perform optimally and maintain long-term quality.

It is also important to consider the type of door (glass, wood, veneered), as the installation method varies. For example, special adhesive magnets are recommended for glass doors to avoid screws.

In short: Official PAX doors with magnetic catches do not exist, but with careful retrofitting, this is not a problem.
