Hello everyone,

I recently received an IKEA PLATSA shelving unit and am now setting it up in my office. I noticed that the white surface already has some stains, probably caused by environmental factors or slight dirt from assembly. I want to clean the unit as thoroughly as possible without damaging the surface or affecting the protective layer.

My question is: What is the best way to clean the IKEA PLATSA when there are stains? Are there any cleaning products I should definitely avoid, and which methods are gentle yet effective?

It is important to me that the surface does not become dull or damaged, as the appearance of the shelving unit should be preserved. Does anyone have experience cleaning PLATSA, especially with stubborn or dried-on stains?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The surface of IKEA PLATSA is mostly made of melamine-coated wood or plastic, which offers some resistance to water and mild cleaning agents.

For stain removal, I recommend the following procedure:
- Use warm water with a neutral dish soap.
- Apply the solution with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, as these can scratch the surface.
- For stubborn stains, you can carefully and sparingly use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to remove grease or ink stains.
- It is important to wipe the surface afterwards with clean water and dry it thoroughly to prevent water spots.

Avoid chemicals such as acetone, gasoline, or chlorine-based cleaners, as they can damage the protective layer and cause discoloration or dullness.

This cleaning method preserves the surface quality and is a practical, proven approach for melamine. If stains do not come off immediately, do not scrub harder to avoid damage.

I would like to add that especially with sensitive surfaces like the PLATSA shelf, the treatment should be gentle.

That is truly the best starting point.

Additionally, it helps to treat stains as quickly as possible, so do not let them dry. For dried-on dirt, applying a cloth soaked in warm water for a few minutes can make removal easier.

Also, be sure to use gentle motions when cleaning – circular or wiping movements without applying too much pressure.

If you want to try spot cleaning with some alcohol, please work with it sparingly and test it first in an inconspicuous area, especially if you are using specific cleaning agents.

Care products for laminate or melamine-coated surfaces from hardware stores are often suitable, but you should always read the product description carefully and confirm compatibility with melamine.

As a general rule: avoid aggressive cleaners and abrasive sponges, as already mentioned.

If small scratches do occur, special melamine repair kits from specialist retailers can help retouch the surface.

Simply clean with a damp cloth and a little dish soap; this is usually sufficient.

For stubborn stains, use isopropanol and then immediately wipe with water. Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive sponges.
