Hello everyone, I noticed that one of the doors on my Billy shelves has started to squeak when I open and close it. I suspect the hinges are the cause, possibly due to friction from dust or a lack of lubrication. It’s important for me to fix the doors without removing them, as the shelves are fully loaded and difficult to empty. Does anyone have experience with how to permanently eliminate this squeaking? Are there any specific home remedies or products that have proven particularly effective with IKEA furniture? Thanks in advance for concrete tips on the procedure, necessary materials, and any precautions!

Hello Alejandro,

To prevent squeaking doors on Billy shelves, the cause is usually the hinges themselves, where friction creates the noise. First, I recommend carefully cleaning the hinges with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust and dirt. Then, you should use a silicone- or Teflon-based lubricant, as these do not leave residues and are not sticky. Avoid oil-based products like WD-40, as they attract dust and can worsen the problem over time.

Apply the lubricant ideally with a small needle or thin nozzle directly into the hinge joint, without removing the door. Several thin layers are more effective than one thick layer. Afterward, move the door back and forth a few times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

If the hinges are damaged or too old, replacement may be advisable, but often cleaning and lubricating is sufficient.

Additionally, I recommend checking the screws on the hinges and tightening them slightly if needed, as loose fittings can increase vibrations. This often helps reduce noise.

A precise approach with suitable materials is essential for a long-lasting solution.

I can confirm this. I have had the same issue several times with Billy-type shelves, and after trying WD-40, the squeaking unfortunately returned quickly. The best option is a dry lubricant like graphite powder or a silicone-based spray grease.

Alternatively, I like to use a special hinge grease available at hardware stores because it absorbs mechanical stress well and does not become sticky.

It is also important to move the hinge regularly during use to help distribute the lubricant evenly. If you want, I can send you the exact product name with which I have had very good results.

That’s usually exactly the case!!

I once had a Billy bookshelf with doors that squeaked loudly – incredibly annoying! I used a silicone spray specially designed for furniture and hinges. Worked really well because the noise stopped right after the first application! 🙂

Tip: Be careful not to spray too much, or it might drip. It’s best to apply a thin layer, then open and close the door several times to distribute it evenly. And don’t worry, it won’t damage anything, quite the opposite!

Good luck and keep us updated, you’ll definitely fix it! It’s great when a small problem can be solved so quickly! 😉
