Hello everyone,

I have noticed that some of the drawer slides in my IKEA Metod kitchen are defective. Specifically, the metal runners no longer lock properly and sometimes even scrape. I want to replace these drawer slides but have not yet found clear instructions on the best way to do this, especially to avoid damaging the drawers and to install the new runners correctly.

Could someone please explain in detail how to professionally remove the defective Metod drawer slides and replace them with new ones? Which tools should I have ready, and are there any specific installation tips I should definitely keep in mind?

Thank you in advance!

First, pull the drawer completely out of the cabinet. Then, at the front of the slide, press the locking levers (small tabs) inward and carefully remove the drawer. Use a screwdriver to detach the old drawer slides and install the new ones.

Tools needed: Phillips screwdriver, and possibly a small screwdriver for the locking levers. It is important not to force the slide out.

I would like to add a bit more detail:

1. Carefully pull the drawer completely out.
2. On both sides of the drawer slides, there are usually small plastic hooks or metal levers that need to be pressed or lifted to release the drawer from the runners.
3. After removing the drawer, you can unscrew the drawer slides from the cabinet using a suitable Phillips screwdriver.
4. When installing new slides, I recommend first mounting only the slide frame into the cabinet, then reattaching the drawer.

Tools to have ready:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Possibly a small Allen wrench

Keep in mind: patience is important to avoid any damage. If you have replacement parts from IKEA, these are usually precise fit.

Great topic, thanks Gracedi for your detailed question! 😄

I had the exact same problem with my METOD pull-outs. It’s important not to just pull the drawer straight out if it’s still locked in place – something can break easily.

What I recommend:
- Patiently press the small latches on the sides
- Then pull the drawer straight out
- Unscrew the old drawer slides
- Fit the new slides (IKEA also offers replacement glides that fit METOD exactly)

And don’t worry – you’ve got this! If you’re feeling unsure, just take it step by step, and if you really get stuck, we’ll be here to help again! 💪

This conventional approach is common, but I believe it’s worthwhile to also inspect the drawer separately when removed and, if necessary, fully refurbish it before simply replacing the slides. Often, the drawer runners themselves are not entirely stable, and this overlooks the root cause of the problem.

Additionally, while IKEA does guarantee its parts, the durability of the METOD drawer slides can sometimes be questionable. It might be worth considering upgrading to higher-quality sliding systems that are also compatible. People who cook frequently and use their kitchens heavily could benefit from this in the long run.

Just a thought!
