I have already disposed of the original packaging, so now I’m wondering if it’s really necessary to order replacements directly from IKEA. I have read that the replacement screws there are relatively expensive – can anyone confirm this? Or are there cheaper alternatives available that do not compromise the stability and quality of the connection? Of course, I don’t want to damage the shelf unnecessarily, but I also don’t want to spend too much money. I would appreciate any tips and experiences with replacement parts for Kallax or similar shelving units!

Or are there cheaper alternatives without sacrificing the strength and quality of the connection?Hi Reimundtar, I know the feeling when you suddenly run out of screws in the middle of building or remodeling. IKEA replacements can indeed be more expensive than expected – especially for small parts like screws. But often, you can easily use standard screws from a hardware store; screws with metal threads in sizes M4–M5 usually fit well if you have the original dimensions.
My advice: measure the screw along with the remaining material, then you can find a replacement easily, which often costs only a fraction of the original. Sustainable and budget-friendly 🙂 Sometimes a bit of DIY spirit doesn’t hurt! Just be careful with special fasteners – in those cases, the original parts are worth it. Good luck!

I once looked for screws for my Kallax shelf and was surprised by the prices at IKEA. However, I found replacement screws at the local hardware store that fit just as well and were much cheaper.
Sometimes it’s also worth asking at IKEA directly. The staff are often helpful and may offer single replacement parts at a lower price than online or might even give them to you for free if you can show your purchase receipt. Hopefully, this helps you get your shelf sturdy again without having to deal with high costs 🙂 Good luck!
Replacement screws from IKEA are often more expensive than standard screws with similar dimensions.
I can confirm that – just note the correct size and buy from the hardware store. It works reliably and is more affordable.
