Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my IKEA Pax wardrobe with plexiglass doors and am looking for practical experiences. I am particularly interested in how durable the plexiglass doors are in everyday use, whether they scratch easily, and how they compare in handling to classic wooden doors or the standard Pax doors. It would also be helpful to hear if anyone has had positive or negative experiences with installation, or if there are recommended suppliers or models that fit well and are long-lasting. I would appreciate detailed reports, as I am also concerned about appearance, stability, and long-term quality.

For use as door material in PAX cabinets, it is important to pay attention to the thickness of the plexiglass, ideally 4-6 mm (0.16-0.24 inches), to ensure stability.

Exactly! Mine was 5 mm (0.20 inches) and I have leaned heavy items against the door several times – everything is perfectly fine! So no worries about stability!

Fingerprints were not a big issue for me! I wipe the doors every few days with a microfiber cloth – that’s more than enough.

Oh yes! Microfiber is simply the best friend of plexiglass doors! Absolutely recommend it!

I have Plexiglas doors on the Pax wardrobe in my office. Installation was straightforward with compatible hinges. Tip: Make sure to maintain the correct clearance to avoid any rubbing. The surface is delicate, so minimize mechanical stress.

Exactly, precision during installation is crucial here. Plexiglass expands more with temperature changes than wood or metal, so if gaps are too tight, it can permanently deform or cause squeaking.

Thanks for all the information so far! I’m also considering whether acrylic glass might be a better alternative to partially mirrored doors. Is there anyone who is well acquainted with the differences in maintenance requirements and everyday practicality between acrylic glass and regular glass? I’m especially interested in whether the visual effect in the room would be described as subtle or more striking.

Does anyone have a good understanding of the differences in maintenance effort and everyday usability between acrylic (Plexiglas) and glass?

I have been able to compare both options: acrylic is lighter and more impact-resistant but requires more care due to its susceptibility to scratches. Glass looks clearer and more elegant but is more fragile. For families with children, acrylic is generally safer, but glass definitely has a more premium appearance.

In summary: Plexiglass doors for PAX are an attractive, though more maintenance-intensive, alternative to glass. Careful installation and regular upkeep are essential for durability. Their impact resistance offers a significant advantage, especially in busy environments. Depending on the location of use, personal preferences between safety, appearance, and maintenance requirements are decisive.
