Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelf: over time, some of the shelves have been damaged, especially the screws that hold the shelves in place. Some of these screws are worn out or damaged. Now I am looking for suitable replacement screws because I would prefer not to replace the entire shelf board.

My question to the community: Where do you buy suitable replacement screws for damaged KALLAX shelves? I mean screws that match exactly in size, thread, and length, and are strong enough to support the weight long-term.

So far, I have contacted IKEA, but they often recommend screw replacement kits that are more expensive than new shelves. Therefore, I am looking for a reliable alternative—whether a hardware store, online shop, or specialized screw supplier.

I would really appreciate your experiences and tips!

I replaced similar screws on my KALLAX with stainless steel screws from the hardware store. It is important to measure the length precisely and choose the correct thread type. Hardware stores often offer set packages for furniture screws.

Hello Robin65,

Is the problem with the screws for the base plate itself, or is it the dowels and brackets attached to the shelf?

Typically, KALLAX furniture uses screws with a diameter of 4 mm and a length between 25 and 35 mm (1 and 1.4 inches), depending on whether the screw goes through the shelf board into the crossbeam or dowel.

My advice:
1. Measure the original screw precisely (length and thread type).
2. At typical hardware stores, stainless steel or galvanized screws are often the preferred choice since they are more durable than the original screws made of softer steel.
3. If you need special connector screws with a countersunk head (that sit flush with the surface), specialist online retailers like "Möbel-Schrauben.de" offer a good selection with exact dimensions.

IKEA shelves often use so-called cam lock fittings, whose screws cannot be easily replaced. In this case, the only option is to order the exact spare parts or consider alternative connection solutions.

If you like, I can send you a detailed overview of the dimensions of KALLAX screws.

That's correct. If these are the ones used, only original replacement parts or a special furniture screw set will work. Standard screws often do not fit.

If the screws are for the shelves themselves (i.e., securing the shelf board to the side panels), make sure that the replacement screws are not too thick to avoid splitting the wood.

I recommend screws with a slightly reduced head profile so they sit flush.

When buying at the hardware store, take a caliper for measuring and bring the original screw with you – this helps prevent purchasing the wrong size.

Alternatively, a specialist store for furniture fittings can also provide good advice.

In that case, definitely use new screws and check whether the holes in the wood have become too large – otherwise, plugs or wooden dowels can help secure the connection.

For KALLAX, I have always ordered replacement screws directly from IKEA. They offer complete sets that fit perfectly. Slightly more expensive than hardware store options, but the precise fit is worth it.
