Denis32Hello everyone,
I recently got a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA for my home, but I noticed that its stability on my smooth parquet floor leaves something to be desired. The shelf tends to wobble a bit or shift slightly with gentle pressure, which concerns me, especially when I store heavier books or items in it.
My question is: How can you improve the stability of BILLY shelves on smooth floors? What simple and effective measures or accessories do you recommend to permanently reduce the risk of wobbling or slipping? Maybe someone knows of proven methods or adapts special feet or pads for the shelves?
I look forward to your practical tips and experiences!

How can you improve the stability of BILLY shelves on smooth floors?A proven method is to attach special anti-slip pads or felt gliders with rubber backing under the shelf feet. These prevent slipping on smooth and delicate surfaces such as hardwood or tile without damaging the floor.
Alternatively, some hardware stores offer adjustable shelf feet that not only allow height adjustment but also have non-slip rubber soles. If possible, you should also secure the shelf to the wall to completely prevent tipping.
It is important to choose feet that adhere firmly but do not leave residues, so the shelf can be moved or repositioned if needed.

To stick anti-slip pads or felt glides with rubber coating under the shelf feetAdditionally, I would like to point out that standard felt glides alone are often insufficient on smooth floors, as they mainly protect against scratches but provide little friction.
It is advisable to use products specifically designed with a non-slip rubber or silicone base. Applying self-adhesive anti-slip mats on the area of the shelf in contact with the floor can also significantly improve stability.
Furthermore, securing the shelf to the wall is the safest measure, especially in homes with children or pets. However, this solution has drawbacks, including the effort required for installation and potential damage to the wall.

How can you improve the stability of BILLY shelves on smooth floors?Hey Denis32, I had the same issue here 🙂
I found some non-slip foam rubber pads quite cheaply on Amazon and simply stuck them under the feet. It worked great—no risk of the shelf sliding anymore, and the floor stays undamaged.
One more tip: if the shelf wobbles slightly, you can add thin felt pads (also under the feet) to compensate for minor unevenness. And yes, attaching it to the wall is of course ideal if you don’t need to move the shelf around often.
A small extra benefit: the shelf stands more firmly and looks sturdier. I always say, good stability also improves the appearance 😉 Good luck!

Wall mountingWall mounting is the safest option.
Attaching non-slip rubber pads or foam rubber buffers under the feet effectively prevents slipping.
Use felt or plastic washers to compensate for uneven surfaces.
