Hello everyone,

I am looking for effective ways to reduce the constant dust buildup inside my Kallax unit. So far, I use the shelves for books and small decorative items, but I have the problem that dust quickly accumulates on the back panel and in the corners, which often can only be removed superficially with regular wiping.

My specific question: Are there any proven tips or solutions that go beyond common cleaning methods? For example, special care products, covers, liners, or even particular arrangements that help to minimize dust buildup in the long term?

I would also appreciate suggestions for suitable accessories or personal experiences that have proven useful in everyday situations. Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello LoEmery,

First of all, thank you for your very clear and focused question; that makes it easier to answer.

Regarding dust inside the Kallax unit, here are some practical suggestions:

1. Covers: Some users use acrylic or plastic panels that can be hung on the front, which significantly reduces dust inside.

2. Shelves with boxes or baskets: Using boxes instead of open shelves helps keep dust from directly contacting your items.

3. Regular ventilation and vacuuming around the furniture helps reduce the buildup of fine dust.

4. Microfiber cloths with antistatic properties make cleaning the back panels easier.

5. If possible, changing the location of the unit can help — try to avoid placing it directly by a window or near a high-traffic dust source.

I hope these points are helpful. If you’re interested, I’m happy to offer more detailed advice on any of these tips.

I can easily understand how annoying constant dust buildup can be, especially when you store a lot on the shelves.

What helps me now is a combination of regular damp cleaning inside and using closed boxes. I have also noticed that air humidity and dust filters in the room play an important role – if the air is too dry, dust gets stirred up and settles even faster.

For me, it is also important not to put too much pressure on myself to keep everything perfectly clean, as that tends to cause more stress than results. :-) Unfortunately, dust can never be completely avoided, but with the right measures, it feels significantly better.

Hello LoEmery,

there is no real "miracle solution," but I have a few practical tips that I have tested myself over the years with my Kallax unit:

Shelving compartments with boxes or baskets: If you use boxes instead of open compartments, dust has less direct contact with your items.

I can only confirm that, especially if the boxes have lids, the dust inside is greatly reduced.

Additionally, I recommend removing the back panel during cleaning and cleaning it separately, as fine dust tends to accumulate there and is otherwise difficult to remove.

An air purifier in the room can also noticeably reduce the amount of dust—I use one myself and really notice the difference, especially with our wooden furniture.

Finally, using an anti-static spray for furniture care can help delay the buildup of new dust, although you should ensure it is compatible with the material.

I would say: an iterative approach rather than a single tip is the best way to go.

To expand on the previous information, I would like to add some precise details:

- Kallax is made from MDF panels with a melamine coating, which can become electrostatically charged and therefore attract dust.

- Antistatic cleaning wipes or sprays reduce the electrostatic charge of the material, thus attracting less dust.

- Plexiglass panels are very effective, but it is advisable to choose a simple front solution that does not visually alter the shelf significantly.

- When positioning the shelf, avoid placing it close to air vents, radiators, or windows.

- Cleaning with a slightly damp microfiber cloth is ideal; heavily wet cloths can damage the surface.

- Optionally, there are self-adhesive felt or plastic mats as liners, which can be easily removed and cleaned; these also prevent dust and protect the surface.

These measures are compatible and can be combined according to the desired level of effort.

I would like to add a brief step-by-step guide here for anyone who wants to proceed systematically:

1. Remove all items and boxes from the cabinet.
2. If possible, take off the back panel of the Kallax unit and clean it separately with an antistatic microfiber cloth.
3. Wipe the interior surfaces with a slightly dampened microfiber cloth and a mild cleaning agent.
4. Optional: Apply a thin layer of antistatic spray to all surfaces and allow it to dry thoroughly.
5. Consider whether you want to use front covers (such as plexiglass) or closed boxes.
6. Place the cabinet in a location without constant drafts (near windows or heaters), and close to a vacuum cleaner or air purifier if possible.

Common mistakes include:
- Over-wetting during cleaning
- Neglecting the back panel
- Not vacuuming the room regularly
- Using open shelves, which increase dust accumulation

I hope this guide provides some structure and helps you further.
