I am currently working on DIY furniture projects and have been looking at the Ikea PAX series. I am particularly interested in which PAX components work best for creative, custom projects.
I am less focused on the traditional use as wardrobes and more on parts like frames, doors, interior fittings, or accessories that can be adapted or repurposed flexibly—for example, for shelving, storage solutions, or even furniture combinations quite different from their original purpose.
Which components have you found to be especially versatile in practice? What should be considered when doing DIY projects with PAX, especially regarding material quality, adaptability, or stability? Are there particular modules that are especially suitable for conversions or unique designs?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hey, great topic! 😎
I think the frame of the PAX cabinets is a real all-rounder. It’s sturdy, fairly easy to work with, and provides a great base for many DIY projects – whether you want to convert it into a shelf, room divider, or even a small bar.
Also, the cabinet doors are excellent if you’re looking for stylish but affordable fronts – especially mirrored or glass doors add quick style to a project.
Important: The back panels are often too thin for heavy loads, so it’s best to plan for reinforcement there.
Have fun with your build, the PAX system is really enjoyable!

To precisely answer the question about the best PAX components for DIY projects, I recommend the following approach:
- Frame elements: These are made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a melamine coating, providing a solid foundation. The modular click-in system makes adjustments easier.
- Doors: Especially the options with mirrors or glass offer interesting possibilities, are stable, and can be easily painted or customized.
- Interior fittings such as drawers or shelves made from metal and wood are versatile and increase usability in various construction styles.
- Back panels are relatively thin (approximately 3 mm (0.12 inches) particle board), not ideal for heavy structures, and should be reinforced during modifications.
- When planning, pay attention to the standard dimensions and connection points of the PAX components, as these increase flexibility.
Conclusion: For DIY projects, the PAX frame, doors, and interior fittings are particularly recommended. Back panels should be used mainly as supplements and with caution.

I can easily understand how frustrating it can be at first when working with the PAX elements and not being sure what really suits your own projects. I felt the same way, especially because the components are so diverse.
What has always worked for me is to start with just the basic frame and then experiment with individual shelves and modular inserts. The advantage is that the main structure is incredibly stable, which gives you confidence during construction.
On the other hand, I once faced a challenge with the back panels – you have to keep an eye on those because they tend to weaken quickly if too much weight or pressure is applied.
Of course, it also depends on how much time and patience you're willing to invest. I think it’s worth starting with the sturdy frame pieces and the doors, then gradually expanding from there.

Additionally, I would like to point out that the PAX doors come in various versions (sliding doors, hinged doors) that allow for different remodeling options. Glass doors are particularly suitable for shelves or display cabinets in the DIY area.
