Hello everyone,
I currently have a basic Ikea Pax wardrobe and would like to expand it with additional shelves to better organize the storage space. Since I already have some basic modules and shelves, I am particularly interested in how to extend the Pax frame structure with more shelves, dividers, or maybe small item organizers without compromising stability or appearance.
I am mainly looking for practical tips: Which extra parts really fit together, are there official extensions, or clever DIY solutions? How can installation errors that lead to instability be avoided? Are there specific maximum load capacities for additional shelf inserts?
It would also be helpful to know how to best utilize the existing interior space – for example, by showing types and dimensions of compatible shelves or possibly suitable third-party products.
Thank you in advance for your support and experiences!

Maybe you could share some details about the dimensions and the number of additional shelves if you already have a clear idea? Thanks for asking. The cabinet is 100 cm (39 inches) wide, 58 cm (23 inches) deep, and just under 236 cm (93 inches) tall. I currently have four shelves but want to increase that to about seven or eight to create smaller compartments.

What exact Pax model do you have? (dimensions, features) That would be importantThe cabinet is the 236 cm (93 inches) high model, 100 cm (39 inches) wide, with standard-depth modular components. The interior currently has two clothing rods, and the rest is empty space.
I’m still looking for ideas on how to store small items or shoes flexibly and whether third-party inserts are worthwhile or sturdy enough. Stability is especially important to me, since the wardrobe will be used quite heavily.
An extension of the Ikea Pax system with additional shelves should be based on the cabinet hole pattern and the maximum load capacity of the shelves.
- Original Pax shelves are optimally designed for the hole spacing, usually with 32 mm (1.25 inches) increments.
- For the 100 cm (39 inches) width, I recommend using center supports to prevent sagging.
- For small items, there are drawer inserts and basket systems from Ikea that are fully compatible.
- Third-party inserts may fit but require very precise measurements to ensure stability and proper fit.
In summary: Original parts are often the safest and most sustainable choice, especially when stability under full load is important.

- For small items, there are drawer inserts and basket systems from Ikea that are easily compatible.I can confirm that. I have had good experiences with the boxes and drawers to keep things organized without much custom work.
To summarize:
- Extensions using original shelves and accessories are the most stable.
- Pay attention to the average load capacity (about 15 kg per shelf).
- Do not overlook additional center supports for widths of 100 cm (39 inches).
- Organizers and inserts optimize space utilization.
If shelves are overloaded too often, there is a risk that not only the shelves will sag, but the frame will also be stressed. Proper installation ensures long-term durability.
