Hello everyone,
I am currently working on DIY furniture projects and have been looking at the Ikea PAX series. I am particularly interested in which PAX components work best for creative, custom projects.
I am less focused on the traditional use as wardrobes and more on parts like frames, doors, interior fittings, or accessories that can be adapted or repurposed flexibly—for example, for shelving, storage solutions, or even furniture combinations quite different from their original purpose.
Which components have you found to be especially versatile in practice? What should be considered when doing DIY projects with PAX, especially regarding material quality, adaptability, or stability? Are there particular modules that are especially suitable for conversions or unique designs?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Back panels are relatively thin (about 3 mm (1/8 inch) chipboard), not ideal for heavy constructions, should be reinforced during renovations. You put it well! I’d like to add that you can easily improve stability with additional wooden boards or metal brackets.
Also, for anyone looking to get creative – the interior fittings of Pax are basically a modular system, offering many possibilities without having to buy everything new. I once built a stylish bench element out of empty drawers, and it worked really well.
Sure, it’s a bit adventurous, but that’s what DIY spirit is all about!
To answer the question directly: The PAX frames are sturdy enough for many DIY variations, including furniture beyond traditional wardrobes.
Especially recommended are:
- Aluminum frame models, as they are easier to work with and more durable
- Sliding doors, because they can be flexibly integrated into open constructions
- Interior fittings with metal rails, since they support the weight and are easy to adjust
For heavier loads, it is advisable to reinforce the back panels with commercially available plywood sheets.
If these aspects are taken into account, PAX components provide a very solid foundation for custom furniture projects.
