Hello everyone, I am planning to place my Ikea Pax wardrobe in a room with a sloped ceiling and am wondering about the best way to do this to make optimal use of the available space while also using the wardrobes effectively. The slope is about 45 degrees, and space near the floor is naturally limited, but I want to avoid unnecessary gaps or unused space under the slope. Are there proven methods to position Ikea Pax wardrobes effectively in such rooms, or is it better to switch to custom-built interiors with specific measurements? I would appreciate any advice on planning, selecting widths and heights, or combining with other Ikea systems!

Ikea lists Pax as a system, but how flexible are they really?

The flexibility mainly lies in the interior fittings and arrangement, not in the base dimensions of the units. The modules are predefined, but there are different heights (201 cm (79 inches) or 236 cm (93 inches)) and two depths available. Inside, shelves, drawers, and hanging rods can be positioned variably. Shortening the external dimensions without skilled modification is not intended. For sloped ceilings, lower units are often recommended, which should be combined with other systems or custom-made solutions.

I understand the uncertainties; initially, this topic was also stressful for me. But with some patience, it gets easier. As semuneo says, I have also installed custom-cut flooring under the sloped ceiling. More important to me than the exact cabinet height is that I can easily see and reach my clothes. A combination of different heights, a flexible arrangement, and simple furniture fittings make it manageable. The operation of the doors is also a major issue for me, especially when the cabinets are used by more than one person.

It is important to take precise measurements of the room, especially the sloped ceiling, as this is the only way to create an effective plan with Pax. Using cabinets that are 35 cm deep (14 inches) under the slope provides extra headroom. I also recommend switching to sliding doors, as these significantly ease handling in rooms with sloped ceilings since they require no additional swing space.

In addition to the previous advice: pay attention to load-bearing capacity and stability when combining shelves or several small modules under a sloped ceiling. Use either sturdy connecting clips or secure the cabinets to the wall. The door mechanism for sliding doors should also be of high quality to ensure smooth operation over the long term.

Based on technical specifications, Pax has a maximum depth of 58 cm (23 inches), which can sometimes be too large for sloped rooms. A depth of 35 cm (14 inches) often provides sufficient storage space while better fitting under sloped ceilings. It is also important to consider whether the rooms remain ventilated, as fully enclosed cabinets under slopes can lead to persistent moisture issues. From a planning perspective, you can consider clever interior fittings such as baskets or drawer inserts for Pax to make the best use of storage space despite limited geometry.

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely keep that in mind!

Ikea Pax shelves can be cut quite well with a good saw.

That sounds interesting; I wasn’t sure if you could actually cut the shelves without damaging the furniture. I will consider that—maybe I’ll combine the affordable basic units with custom-cut wooden parts to make better use of the space under the slope. How is the stability of the modified shelves?

Unfortunately, Ikea doesn’t provide an official guide for this, but your advice is already helpful. I’m happy to receive more tips on interior fittings or door types.
