Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install an Ikea PAX wardrobe in a relatively small niche in my apartment. The niche is approximately 120 cm (47 inches) wide and 60 cm (24 inches) deep, slightly narrower than the standard PAX modules. My main question to the community is: How can Ikea PAX be best utilized in small niches, both functionally and visually?

I would appreciate tips on selecting the right modules, possible modifications, combined with good ideas for interior organization and appearance. Also, experiences on how to use PAX as efficiently as possible despite spatial limitations, and whether certain fronts or interior fittings are particularly suitable.

Thank you in advance for any helpful contributions!

In the small niche, I would recommend choosing narrower modules and instead placing more smaller modules side by side, if the niche allows. This increases flexibility and the range of possible uses.

For optimal use of PAX systems in small niches, I recommend the following approach:

- Measure the niche with the highest precision, including doors and baseboards.
- If necessary, trim or adjust the PAX frames to ensure they fit well in depth and width.
- Use sliding doors instead of hinged doors to save space.
- Organize the interior with adjustable shelves and drawers for a better storage system.
- Choose light-colored fronts or reflective surfaces to visually enlarge the space.

Common mistakes include neglecting the correct depth or ignoring door clearance.

Thank you, Repar and SauDietmar, for the quick tips.

@SauDietmar: You mentioned shortening. Do you know if Ikea provides official recommendations or dimensional tolerances for cutting PAX components? I want to avoid cutting in the wrong places in case it affects stability.

Also, I was considering whether using internal lighting in such tight spaces could improve functionality. Does anyone have experience with this?

Briefly on the topic of interior lighting: Ikea offers suitable LED strips and lighting modules that can be easily integrated. This is especially useful in tight niches to provide good illumination of the interior space.

Ikea does not officially guarantee modifications after cutting, as the modules are manufactured in standard sizes. However, for example, the side panels above the frames can be trimmed easily with a good saw to adjust height or depth. It is important not to damage load-bearing or fixed parts. It’s best to make a quick sketch before starting and check which components can be modified without issue.

Yes, lighting really helps in small niches to make contents more visible. I recommend LED strips with motion sensors or manually operated lights, which Ikea also offers.
