Hello everyone,

I am planning to securely mount my new IKEA Besta shelving system to the wall and want to be certain about the best anchors and screws to use. My wall is made of solid concrete, and I want to avoid the brackets loosening over time or not supporting the weight adequately. Since IKEA Besta, including the supplied screws, sometimes feels a bit unstable, I’m wondering if special mounting hardware is needed to ensure a permanently secure attachment.

Does anyone have experience with particularly heavy-duty anchors and screws for the Besta series? What about the appropriate size and the right type of screw? I would like to know your specific recommendations, especially regarding safe wall mounting in concrete.

Looking forward to your tips and advice!

I understand that you want to play it safe, Arne9. For my Besta installation in an old concrete wall, I had good experience using heavy-duty anchors. It’s important that the anchors and screws are truly suited to the wall thickness and the weight of the shelf. I used 8 mm (5/16 inch) heavy-duty anchors with matching metric screws 6 x 60 mm (1/4 x 2 3/8 inches) to ensure a secure hold.

However, I was also uncertain at first and did a lot of research because I didn’t want the heavy shelf to eventually fall off the wall—this is especially important when you have children or pets. My recommendation is to be careful when starting with a hammer and to drill the holes precisely, since inaccurate work can cause more problems later on than using high-quality materials.

What exactly is the condition of your wall? Concrete ceiling or wall?

For the secure installation of IKEA Besta on concrete walls, I recommend going into a bit more detail. The choice of anchors and screws strongly depends on the load, anchor length, and drill hole depth:

- Anchor type: Injection mortar anchors or heavy-duty expansion anchors are suitable for concrete. The latter are made of metal and offer high load capacity.
- Screws: M6 screws with a length of at least 60–80 mm (2.4–3.1 inches) provide good support, depending on the anchor length and wall thickness.
- Drill hole: At least 70 mm (2.8 inches) deep to fully utilize the anchor’s load capacity.

The process:

1. Check the wall carefully for a solid structure (not just surface plaster).
2. Use a professional hammer drill to drill precise holes.
3. Insert the anchors fully, without forcing them.
4. Tighten screws only by hand so they don’t over-torque – overtightening is also a risk.

Additionally, it is advisable to use washers with all screws to distribute the load and prevent damage to the shelf rail.

I wonder whether you plan to consider loads from heavy appliances or books? This is important for selecting the appropriate anchors and screws.

Hello Arne9,

to thoroughly answer your question about the appropriate combination of anchors and screws for securely mounting IKEA Besta on concrete walls, here is a brief guide:

- First, you should know that IKEA Besta usually comes with particle board screws, which are simply not sufficient for wall mounting.

- For concrete, I recommend using heavy-duty metal anchors (expansion anchors) with a diameter of at least 8 mm (0.31 inches).

- When assembling the Besta unit, hanging rails are usually used, which should be fixed with M6 screws that are 60 mm (2.4 inches) long. Make sure the screws and anchors are properly matched.

- It is recommended that the anchor is embedded at least 60 to 70 mm (2.4 to 2.8 inches) deep into the concrete to ensure adequate load-bearing capacity.

- Always use a suitable drill bit for concrete (e.g., SDS Plus) and apply a dust extraction system or cover well, as the drill holes need to be clean and precise.

- Screws should be equipped with washers to prevent damage to the bracket and to distribute the force evenly.

Common installation mistakes:

- Using simple plastic anchors on solid walls.
- Anchors or screws that are too short.
- Loose tightening, which makes the mounting unstable.

In summary: Anchors with an 8 mm (0.31 inch) diameter and M6 screws between 60 mm and 80 mm (2.4 to 3.1 inches) in length are a good choice. This will cover most Besta variants securely.

As an alternative, for very heavy loads, chemical anchors can be used, which offer even better holding strength.

That’s correct, this combination fits well and ensures a secure hold.

Concrete walls are solid, so avoid using simple plastic anchors.

You don’t need knife anchors or timber screws.

In addition to the previous discussion, I would like to add the following:

For the IKEA Besta system in concrete walls:

- Heavy-duty metal expansion anchors with a diameter of at least 8 mm (5/16 inches) and a length of 60–80 mm (2 3/8 – 3 1/8 inches) provide sufficient load capacity.
- Screws should be metric M6, preferably countersunk head screws for flush mounting.
- When drilling holes, clean workmanship is essential; holes that are too large reduce holding strength.
- Tightening the screws must be done with controlled torque; overtightening can damage the anchors, while undertightening compromises the load capacity.

Quick fixes using universal anchors or plastic plugs should be avoided, as they are not designed for the eventual load of the shelving unit.

I also recommend using anchors designed specifically for M6 screws, meaning plugs with at least 8 mm (5/16 inches) diameter, not 6 mm (1/4 inch), since screw and anchor must work together.

If particularly high weight is planned, chemical adhesive anchors should be used, as they offer the best hold. Otherwise, traditional heavy-duty metal anchors are entirely sufficient for residential use.
