Hello everyone, I am currently planning to get a large PAX wardrobe from IKEA for my bedroom. Since I want to avoid any surprises regarding the size, I have the following question: How much space does a large PAX wardrobe actually require in the room, considering the width, height, and depth, including ventilation and possible modifications? I especially want to know how much clearance should be planned for opening the doors or drawers, whether additional space is needed at the back because of the depth, and how all of this changes depending on the wardrobe’s height and width. My room measures about 3.5 x 4 meters (11.5 x 13 feet), and I am planning a wardrobe with at least 2.5 meters (8 feet) in width and 2 meters (6.5 feet) in height. It would be helpful if someone could also include the minimum clearances necessary for optimal use. Thank you in advance!

CHRISTOP338 Dec 2015 18:42Hey bauto, that’s a good and very detailed question! For such large PAX wardrobes, you should definitely plan the following: a depth of about 60 cm (24 inches) is standard, but add at least 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) of clearance from the wall if you have ventilation or cables behind the wardrobe. For the doors, leave at least 60 cm (24 inches) of space in front so they can open comfortably—especially if they have handles. Sliding doors save space but also need some clearance from the wall and floor.
Since you are planning at least 2.5 meters (8 feet) in width, expect the overall area to be at least 3 meters (10 feet) wide plus some extra room for maneuvering around it. The height usually doesn’t affect the room much, except visually, but it is important to have easy access to power outlets or possibly ceiling moldings underneath.
All in all, you should plan for around 70-80 cm (28-31 inches) of clearance around the wardrobe to avoid feeling cramped.

KarTristan9 Dec 2015 08:12To optimize the use of a large PAX wardrobe, I recommend the following:
- The depth of the wardrobe is usually specified as 58 or 66 cm (23 or 26 inches), so you should plan for at least 60 cm (24 inches).
- For hinged doors, a clearance of 60 cm (24 inches) in front of the wardrobe is advisable to allow the doors to open fully.
- Sliding doors do not require front clearance, but there must be enough space on both sides for the sliding tracks.
- At least a 2 cm (0.8 inch) gap from the wall ensures better ventilation and helps prevent moisture damage.
Therefore, you should not only consider the wardrobe’s dimensions but also plan for the necessary surrounding space to keep your bedroom comfortable.

I would add the practical tip that, if possible, you shouldn’t position the cabinet side with the most frequently used compartments right in a corner, to avoid creating a narrow passage in the room. Otherwise, when you open it quickly, you often find yourself cramped.
Also, the height of 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) is standard, but keep in mind that depending on the room height and cabinet system, you might need a lower or higher space to comfortably reach the top shelf.
I think it’s important that you consider how the room will feel after the installation. I also had a large PAX wardrobe, about 2.4 meters (8 feet) wide and around 2 meters (6.5 feet) high with sliding doors. At first, I had very little clearance in front, and it felt quite tight when walking past. If possible, I would recommend at least 70 cm (28 inches) of space in front of the wardrobe, especially with sliding doors, otherwise it can feel cramped. Also, if you might want to expand the wardrobe later, you should plan to keep some distance from the wall.
Very important point, which is often overlooked.
